    We are digging for gallium 🪽 👀

    And other critical raw materials for everyday life – like gallium, that powers your smartphones and medical devices.

    And now, we have selected strategic projects to boost extraction, processing and recycling, so we can keep powering everyday life 👇

    A visual titled "Crack the Critical Material Act: spot the strategic ones" featuring periodic table tiles for Arsenic, Nickel, Copper, Lithium, Phosphorus, Iron, Oxygen, Carbon, Tantalum, Helium, Boron, and Neon against a light purple background with the European Commission logo. At the bottom the text, "Solution in comments."

    The strategic raw materials you were looking for: Boron, Nickel, Copper, Lithium, C - Graphite.

    PS: we had to edit the image because of a typo.

    Thanks for pointing this out @Pepijn. We're digging into what went wrong there. 🪏 It may have something to do with our scheduling tool.

    @justme @EUCommission I'm happy the EU commission is doing something in that regard and communicated it on Mastodon :awesome: small steps! And with time they might even learn to post clickable links :loading:
    Also if you've followed their link you would have seen that they are also boosting 19 recycling projects:
    "The projects cover different stages of the raw materials value chain: eight are on extraction, 11 on processing, and 19 are recycling projects"

    @tuga
    Things like uniformity (which admittedly the EU is slowly making progress on), modularity, repairability and laws around forcing opening up the software AND the hardware specifications of a product if a company abandons that product would make great inroads into circularity and benefit people and the environment instead of corporations. Relaxing laws around things like extraction of natural resources or energy efficiency is madness and only benefits short term profits of corporations.

    @justme @tuga @EUCommission and no one in this thread said anything contrary to that...
    The EU commission is making a statement on Mastodon (a free and open software, from their self hosted instance) about their program to decrease Europe's supply chain dependency, with most projects even focussing on recycling this time!
    I do not think criticising progress for not being big enough is going to help foster more circularity... And I believe this is progress.

    @Fluks @tuga @EUCommission On the other hand, baby steps and flat out greenwashing also won't foster more circularity. Neither will they prevent more and more heat related deaths or massive economic damage from climate related circumstances like the droughts and floods that have been plaguing our planet more and more.

    @EUCommission Wrong. Gallium cannot "power" anything because it's not an energy source. "Everyday like" keeps on being disrupted everywhere you insist in digging for materials and destroying environment for your fake #EnergyTransition

    @EUCommission
    It is good to dig for some materials.
    It is however crucial to make sure that the people who are digging are treated decently and get the real rewards that they deserve.
    Perhaps this also could contribute to avoid desperate emigration.

    @EUCommission Out of the 47 projects, 19 are categorized as recycling and another 5 "combine processing and recycling".

    Not great, but not bad either. I think some derisking is worthwhile in its own right, too.

    @EUCommission thank you for your attention to factuality. This contrasts greatly to other nations whose official social media channels frequently have typos and blatantly false claims

    @EUCommission I am surprised about copper, I would have thought there was enough copper leftover from building materials (wires and pipes).

    Interesting! Thanks

    I remember some years ago there was some research going on about mining old landfills.

    @EUCommission
    How about stopping to try and become a police- and surveillance state by forcing everyone to give up their privacy for just trying to use the internet or play a video game?
