@fluepke @f4grx @freecad Imagine anyone not being a computer person but wanting a good, free CAD software.

"Go fork it and keep it slop free" is like telling people who don't want a subscription for heating in their car to build their own car if they're not happy with the existing options.

I am not here to argue if AI is good or bad. Slop free software is a valid request. My question is: Why would the maintainers of a free software owe us the hard work of hand writing code?

Regarding cars: I don’t like the existing options and therefore don’t own one.
Regarding subscriptions: Adobe is subscription, I dislike Gimp and Inkscape, so I paid for Affinity, which I think is genuinely good.

@fluepke @f4grx @freecad Nobody owes anyone anything here.
But I consider freecad a genuinely good thing and I really like what they're currently doing, especially for makers.
However, using, and thereby supporting AI is a genuinely bad thing in my world view, so this feels like finding out a very kind neighbour who's always helped you votes for fashists.

I don't like (or own) cars either, but I do like good CAD software and would like to own that.

@gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad well, that neighbor comparison does make sense, indeed.

I’d personally disagree, that using software made from LLMs (for a lack of better alternatives) should be considered being supportive of those dystopian AI overlords and tech bro fascists.

@fluepke @gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad because it's not "free software" if it's got slop in it.

What is free about depending on the current capitalism hype train?
What is free about generating code that can't be maintained or understood?
What is free about contributing other volunteers' work to the theft machine training data?

Nothing. The maintainers of "free software" owe it to themselves to not slop, what they owe to us is only to not fraudulently brand slop output as "free software".

    @amberage

Many questions for 500 char limit…

    1. Free as in free beer or free as defined by the church of GNU?
    2. Project idea: Was this code written by AI or a human? / Which one is better? (Tinder like web-app to investigate your claim)
    3. Most open source software has permissive licenses, that allows for usage as training data, regardless of ethical questions. I do personally believe knowledge ought to be radically free for anyone and everyone, even if this includes my enemies.

    1. Slopware is free as in free beer, I am not familiar with the religious beliefs.
    2. Genuine curiosity.
    3. Add “not to for use as ai training data” to your license and beat the shit out of these AI overlords with EFF in case they disobey.

@fluepke @amberage slopware cannot be copyrighted by definition.

Also software with slop becomes unmaintainable by humans and *requires* more ai use for maintenance. And the associated payment when it becomes too complex, like in linux.

Thats why I also argue that genai is destroying open source communities.

Totally agre with you. I don't get how someone can demand to steer especially opensource projects.
    It is always like:
Booo but Im not a programmer... - But you can pay some...
Booo but it is expensive... - well you can group with others...

@f4grx @FoxVK @freecad I still like it, and, partly due to a lack of options, I'm not going to switch to something else.

Unfortunately we are at a point where the only option to avoid AI entirely is to live off grid without electricity, and I'm not willing to do that.

But with projects like freecad we at least have a chance to voice our concerns and actually achieve something!

@fluepke LLMs have moral problems. They use stolen work, they produce catastrophic amounts of pollution while they run. They harm society in myriad ways too long to list here.

Think of asking for slop-free code as a request to do what they do, but without so much harm to the rest of us. Using LLMs (as they are available today) actively does harm. The request for slop-free code is asking them to do what they do in a less damaging way. That’s a reasonable ask.

@paco @fluepke @gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad FreeCAD is already great and improving noticeably with every release. I see no need to accelerate progress at the expense of our planet and people. Keep it ethically sound and artfully crafted by humans.

@fluepke @gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad They don't owe work. They do owe non-betrayal of an expectation they established. If they no longer want to maintain it as free software but instead want to make a slop thing, they should leave the project in the state it's in and call their new slop thing something different.

@dzwiedziu OP was asking someone else to do that hard work for them for free.

When I go to a car workshop, they usually demand money and nobody's upset about it.

@fluepke @dzwiedziu then ask for this money. Free as in freedom, not as in free beer.

The "OP" (I assume you meant F4GRX Sébastien ⸚) used "free" in an ambiguous way, sure, but it was juxtaposed against "proprietary", so I doubt that the meaning was meant to be "gratis".

    @fluepke
    OP? Freecad account?

Making slop is not free. Tokens have a cost, which is for the time being heavily subsidised.
Then you have externalised costs: technical asbestos in the code, cognitive decline, broad environmental and societal costs.

Car workshops usually don't work on the FOSS model and don't use slop extruders to repair car's.

Also don't remove people from the conversation without a reason.

@fluepke @dzwiedziu I'm pretty sure that was meant as "free" as in "freedom", not "free" as in "no money exchanged".

Please pay your developers, even if their work isn't as heavily subsidized as tokens are, for now.
