One has to laugh, or cry.
> References to sexual orientation and gender identity were considered offensive to a majority of
survey respondents
Indeed, "cis" is considered an offensive word.
To be clear, some of the words included here are incredibly offensive, and are generally used to punch down.
Others... not at all!
@neil
The Season's new words.
@Photo55 Me too!
@neil I am surprised at how offensive Bumberclat is in these surveys.
@neil Comparing the gender table to any other table is very disappointing.
@neil A triptychon, a story in 3 pictures.
[edit: the internet connection on my end is fine, at 500Mbit/s. Maybe OFCOM's internet shit the bed though, hard to see from where I am]
@neil 80% of people think "fanny" is too offensive to be broadcast in the day? what the fuck is WRONG with them, the whole point of it is that it's a kid-friendly word. That's also why it's funny
I can see how some of the words will be highly problematic in the context of how they are likely to be used.
Other words... not at all!
@neil I presume the "survey respondents" were self-selected rather than a true random sample i.e. professional complainers and self important bigots?
@neil
Wait until they learn about the term perisex (meaning not intersex).
The dominant group always hates when they can't just define themselves as "normal"
@neil and only 43% of respondents thought it was ever acceptable to broadcast it.
What are we doing here? There's clearly something very wrong with their methodology... Where did they canvas? Terfington Village Hall, Terfshire?
@neil
The document refers to some participants as “LGB”.
As:
> 18. Findings for transgender and non-binary respondents have not been reported because the base size for this population is too small for robust analysis.
As an amateur statistic enjoyer I could understand this.
But as a TERF/FART Island un-afficionado I also understand this and it's bad.
@neil I’m wondering how long until a group of straight people call heterosexual offensive as a word 🙄
@neil TIL: The "watershed" is basically the "Sandmännchen" of the UK :D
@neil so it's offensive to say they are on the same side? Because cis literally means "on this side of" as in cismontane meaning being on the same side of a mountain as the speaker. I don't think we're the snowflakes here as they can't even handle a little stem word.
@neil I see we’re headed to the point where “vertebrate” or “carbon-based life form” will be considered harmful.
@neil this is so funny, omg the english are such a pathetic people
@neil Well fuck, there are a few words there I need to look up.
Son of a bitch.
@neil 'Ginger' is a swear word?
That's going to make cooking programmes awkward..
@neil
I'll admit I had to look up what some mean.
@neil These are hilarious. Yes, I have the brain of a 10 year old.
@Extelec @neil I was once responsible for installing one of those execrable voice response phone systems (I am sorry).
Reminded of one of the user-acceptance reports, which contained page after page of appendices detailing the customer response to the system.
They ... weren't pleased - it was packed full of fresh linguistic idioms.
@losttourist @fuzzix @neil I once got halled over the coals for using the term "bi-polar" regarding magnetism.
I sometimes get the feeling people go out of their way to be offended
@Extelec @losttourist @fuzzix @neil
There are people who would take offence if this car was mentioned before the watershed, or indeed at all.
@neil it’s not as funny as the Viz Profanisaurus.
@neil best read I’ve had in a while
@neil I see Nazi is in the "race, nationality and ethnicity" category.
No idea what Uppity is as a slur, but Mr Uppity had better mind his back or he'll get cancelled
@neil how long until they're issuing fines for using them on your website without Highly Effective Age Assurance?
@neil How useful! I can now choose a word to precisely match the level of offence I intend.
Ranked AND colour coded. Superb!
@neil put a dash in it and suddenly a spice becomes a naughty word! Reminds me of this Tim Minchin song.

@neil Nice to see that good old "cunt" is still a top offensive word. And hilarious that Scottish people still wonder what the fuss is all about 😆
@neil Any thoughts regarding why a JavaScript is needed for a page with a list of (naughty or not) words?
@neil The level of detail this research reveals is magnificent. I tip my hat to them.
Also, obviously, yeah it's a fun read to look up naughty words. And arguably useful to learn new ones so when the kids start using them, I can interject. Often they've heard something somewhere and don't know what it means, and while I'm pretty well educated in this regard, there are always more things to learn - e.g. I'm gold star standard with body part swears, but don't know many of the religious ones.
@neil I've always taken the attitude I will explain words to the kids but will also explain how and when (or not) to use them.
Recent discussion off the back of this attitude include explaining when to use "shit" versus its past participle "shat" and what a tit wank is.
And the appearance of a singular n-word in Forrest Gump prompted a discussion about race attitude over the decades so thorough that we had to pause the film to talk it through.
It frequently challenges my own understanding too
@gilester45 @neil Ok, I really want to know how you're going to explain what a tit wank is to your kids.
@gilester45 @neil And does it extend to a soapy tit wank?
@gilester45 @neil How extended?
Sherbet dip tit wank?
Don't ask where the liquorice stick goes. I wince.
@jamesb @gilester45 Sounds fun.
For "sounding"? Or something else?
@neil it’s good to see they haven’t added a Welsh version this time
If you haven’t, have a look at the 2021 Welsh language version of the report. No Welsh language experience needed to work out why
@neil
Wow wow, easy! 80 pages of naughty words?
@neil Excellent, a list of naughty words to try and slip into programme continuity announcements :)
@neil this is fun to read. I skip many BBC shows, but I'm catching up now in less than no time!
