    one upside of perl ageing out its own community is that it's at least a more-or-less stable language. i can knock out a throwaway script with the same knowledge i had 25 years ago. and there's no possibility for the code to look nice so i don't have any internal pressure to worry about that

    @joe i am literally a perl expert and i will happily endorse this message. most of the perl community have actually lost their minds. even people i used to consider friends.

    @dysfun that's interesting because anytime i have an inkling of "this is tedious, maybe i should just use bobot this one time" it usually ends up being doable with a half hour or less of perl scripting. perl seems uniquely poised still to let an expert slop competitively with an LLM

    @joe except that LLMs are shit at perl in particular.

    not that you'd know any different hearing dave cross ("data munging with perl") talk ("it writes code better than me")

    @dysfun @joe LLMs are shit at languages that aren't either insanely popular (like JS) or don't have guardrails in the form of strong, static typing systems (like Rust)

    @rk @joe it's not a new thing, i was saying exactly the same a decade ago. they just.. i dunno how to put this really, they have become unhinged. they have completely lost touch with reality. like proper hardcore mental illness of the bad kind territory.

    @rk @joe i dunno when it happened, but at some point they just became embarrassing old men on stage. larry proper lost touch with reality about 15 years ago

    That being said if you have a more concrete example, I’d appreciate it. I’m always vaguely interested in doing some Perl 5 hacking to recapture my youth but if they’ve gone full flat earth or something I’d prefer to protect my mental health.

    @rk @joe well a disturbing number of them have gone full AI, so maybe that's worse.

    honestly, i've been out for so long now because i just can't be dealing with them. haven't been to a perl event in over a decade. but it's not an isolated thing.. anyone who even got a modicum of fame in perl came out of it changed for the worse.
