I keep a few pro-"AI" blogs in my feed reader to keep tabs on the rhetoric and some days it's just genuinely exhausting. One of the latest outlines how it thinks that anti-"AI" sentiment is a psyop designed to sabotage the golden age of open source and the democratisation of software (apparently, Russia, China, and 'big IP' are the likeliest conspirators)

Four years ago the blog in question was writing about functional programming and cross-compilation

Following the pro-"AI" crowd's writing is genuinely like watching a serious mental health episode unwind in slow motion

    I'm so tired

Edited: the post seems to be deleted now. Probably for the best for everybody involved.

When I started tracking these things my biggest concerns were how toxic the tech is for knowledge work, education, media, and the arts; the environment; the inevitable bubble; and how it makes everything it touches less reliable. I genuinely thought the concerns about the mental health of heavy chatbot users were overblown but it now looks to me to be a major and widespread issue

@baldur video games and D&D, on the other hand…

Maybe we should find a televangelist, connect it to a mom group and declare Claude the antichrist.

    > Even better, you now own the software, hardware and docs produced by AI. It's compounding wealth,

sure I do own my car, too. I have a conceptional idea how it works.

    that's about it.

I still need someone who helps me repair and maintain it.

@baldur "Let's use AI to build a world of 100% Open Technology. A decentralized world where rent-seekers and other parasites no longer have any power."

Rent-seeking is literally the stated aim of the AI companies. How does someone miss that?

@baldur Those guys see everything in purely economic terms, as processes transforming inputs into outputs. But that's not how art works, not how crafts work, not how creativity or learning works. Not at all. How sad to have such an anemic view of the world.

@onepict @baldur Huh. Not even archived on the Wayback Machine.

I get a hint from the title, but was the author really claiming that the only reason people are anti-AI is because of some coordinated action or something?

@jzb @onepict Yeah. It went through a variety of scenarios, dismissing the fear of losing your job as unfounded, environmental concerns as overblown, that the commons is healthier than ever, before writing about how Iran or Russia are more likely to be behind the psyop than China, but coming to the conclusion that "Big IP" were "the biggest proponents of anti-AI rethoric" [sic].

It ended with "Don't listen to anybody over 35 about AI."

@baldur @onepict that's some amazing mental gymnastics there.

Disappointing. I actually follow the same blog for similar reasons. Pity their RSS feed only offers a summary and not the entire post. I wonder if it's time to stop. I'm not sure if it's great for *my* mental health to be exposed to that sort of thing even more than I am already...

@baldur I remember when Functional Programmes, generated by theorem provers, were going to replace programmers - late 1980s'/early 1990's.

    Same shit, different slop.

    @baldur

Unfortunately here in America the following psychosis applies:

    Everything’s a psyop when you’re a moron!

Everything’s a conspiracy when ::checks notes::

Insert that meme where the guy blames someone else for what he just did. “Why would morons do this?”

@baldur I've been wanting to do the same thing (although it is indeed hard to read!) , would you mind sharing with me the blogs you follow that are "pro ai"?

@jat23 I mean, the one I linked to is one, although they seem to have deleted their latest.

    kerkour.com

But I'm a little bit hesitant to dig up the rest (only about half a dozen, to be honest) as I don't want to make targets of people who I think are mostly just foolish and misguided.
