Still recovering, so full write up to come, but this week at @djangomed, @judy2k and I bootstrapped django-bgt, supervised background threads for Django, on top of @hynek's new bgt.
django-bgt provides a simple service decorator, management command, and atomic leader election for all the DBs supported by Django's ORM. (Channels based wakeups are just a few tests away.)
Thanks to @hynek showing the way, django-bgt is a very exciting new tool for supervised periodic work in Django 🤩 1/2

@carlton @djangomed @judy2k I see y’all separated the service threads into a separate entrypoint which is fair and probably djangonic; that said the reason I made pgbg is to AVOID having to have a separate process.
The cool thing is that you can launch the background services in all your web workers and only one works, which simplifies operations. Ya think this could also be implemented in a Django-friendly way? 🤔

@hynek @djangomed @judy2k As free threading matures, probably yes. Django's main branch (which will be 6.2, next version) is already free-threading compatible as far as the test suite says, but we're pretty sure there'll be edges to track down, and library compatibility to smooth. BUT as that matures, there's no reason this couldn't be in-process. Running the bgt supervisor in your W/ASGI entry point isn’t going to be difficult per se. (We're just not there yet.)

@carlton @djangomed @judy2k Well wouldn’t it be great if (Django-)bgt drove some of the progress there 🤩

@hynek @djangomed @judy2k it would! 😜
@justin and Žan were working on a benchmarking tool this week that will enable us throw different scenarios under load and see how they behave, so it might be that (we can see that) the road isn’t as long as we might fear.
It’s exciting times tbh

@carlton @djangomed @judy2k Ah so y’all implemented pgbg on top of Django ORM?

"Y'all" is doing a lot of work here – it was almost entirely @carlton's work. He did a great job.

@judy2k is of course being shy. I just got excited when you showed us bgt, and sketched the leadership bit. (And a wakeup that we didn't get finished yet.) Mark did the rest this week.
I'm super excited about how useful this is going to be, so thanks (as always!) for your work (on bgt, this time). 🎩

@carlton @djangomed @judy2k I’m glad a) there are still people caring about new #Python packages and b) see the to-me obvious value in this. Lots of empty stares. 😅

@hynek @carlton @djangomed I've explained these libraries to a few people this week and at some point their eyes have lit up. Just need to find the magic word that acts as a lever. "Leader" and "exponential backoff" have been the key phrases.

@judy2k @carlton @djangomed ISTM like the Python community is lacking a bit of shared lingo around these concepts which makes it harder to advertise. Doing original (to a community) stuff is hard. 😅

Is this project even maintained?
