Anyone building with #11ty use WebC?
I've built with 11ty and Lit separetely. Currently considering the best way to build in 11ty with Web Components, and WebC seems the obvious choice, but it has not received a release in 3 years.
Not sure if I'm creating tech debt for myself if I go with WebC. #WebComponents #WebDev

I made a little video testing it out. And I'm uh writing this toot with the Myna app.

This is cool. For a while I used #TalonVoice really just for the speech-to-text capabilities. But, with Talon that's only one part of its many capabilities and you gotta screw around with config files.

Pretty neat to have an Ubuntu-native GNOME app for speech-to-text.

I've been working on a FEP draft for the past few days: FEP-22cd Attributing translations.

Hackers' Pub already machine-translates articles, but I want authors to be able to publish their own translations too, and let organizations split the work across members. Once you do that, Activity Streams doesn't give you much to work with. attributedTo names an author, not a translator. Nothing distinguishes a language a human translated from one an AI produced. And nothing says whether a translation still matches the current text or was written against an older version of the article.

Schema.org already has translator, translationOfWork, and inLanguage for exactly this, so the FEP mostly reuses those instead of minting new vocabulary. I had to decide whether to give each language its own object, linked back to the original, or keep everything on one object the way contentMap already does. Splitting it looked cleaner at first, but it also means spreading replies and reactions across separate posts for each translation. I don't want adding a translation to split the conversation.

I kept everything on one object, using contentMap for the text in each language. The draft adds a translations property to record who translated each version and whether it was translated by a human, generated by a machine, or generated by a machine and reviewed by a human. A timestamp lets you tell whether a translation still matches the current text, without publishing the server's private edit history.

You can discuss it on SocialHub or in the draft PR. If you run anything that touches multilingual content, I'd like to hear where this breaks.

Also had to look up what the heck the "Sargasso Sea" was, GNOME Maps teaches you geography. #Biology

#GNOME Maps really likes the Hudson Bay.

Next gotta learn how font designers actually work because I'm probably doing a few things incorrectly. But, experimenting was fun.

Latest fun side project has been to make a font.

I use #Inkscape for everything, so when I saw they had a Typeface template, I wanted to give it a try. I drew letters on paper, scanned them in. In Inkscape I found it more effective to use the “fill” tool than to use “Trace Bitmap.” One counter-intuitive thing with Inkscape is you're not supposed to use pages, only layers.

After creating the glyphs in Inkscape, I was able to import the SVG in FontForge and then export it as a font file. #Design

Though had to cheat with the Bookwyrm icon by using a book, I could not find a way to make their logo work.

I made a solid color version of their logo, I tried just showing the dragon's head, but at the smaller scale it just didn't look right and the head look a bit weird. #Design

Ooh #Speedlify got a big update.

This year I moved away from emojis and web safe fonts, following a new design for my personal site. It goes for a more unique feel that heavily relies on SVGs. After selecting fonts I thought were interesting (Luciole & Rakkas), I found a tool to prune the characters I don't use, taking them down to ~10 KB each.

Seems to have paid off, made it into the top 100 on the leaderboard. 😁 #WebDev

#LanguageTool went paid, seems like they're pivoting to AI. Compared to Grammarly, I was quite happy with LanguageTool, so this was disappointing news.

However, it made me aware of another grammar extension, “Harper.” Which is a younger #grammar extension with a focus on privacy and performance.

Here's to the next 10,000 newsletters I sign up for but don't read. 🍻

Welp after 2 years on #Nextcloud, I'm moving off it.

Hosting is getting pricey to keep Nextcloud usable. It's a hammer that's good at many things, but a master of none. Having it handle file syncing, music, calendars, todo lists, and sharing was cool. But, I didn't need the email and messaging features, and as a photo app it always felt lacking.

In the spirit of picking the right tool for the job, I'm trying out #Immich for photos. So far I'm very impressed with how usable it is.
