“While #Musk owns SpaceX *controls Starlink systems & can impose restrictions on them in #Ukraine, those that began overnight are on the #Starshield military version of the system controlled by the Pentagon. This suggests🚨the decision to limit the speed of the Starshield systems was made within the #Trump admin.”
-C Miller, & from the FT

“Normal Starlink has been speed-restricted since 2025, so the issue is with Starshield - indicating:🚨a #DoD action (not directly SpaceX)…”

Six people were killed and thirteen injured in Lutsk today. My condolences to everyone who has lost family members and loved ones because of this Russian aggression. A “shahed” drone attack damaged civilian infrastructure – a residential building and a store. More strikes, more terror. And this comes after a massive overnight attack on our energy infrastructure, with recovery work still underway in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and the Kharkiv region.

And now the Russians are launching a new wave of drones. This is intentional, permanent pressure on our people. Russia is once again showing what it really wants. This is a deliberate continuation of the war, in defiance of calls from the United States and the American President. That is why Moscow must not be talked into stopping – it must be forced to stop through increased pressure, sanctions, and assistance to Ukraine that enables us to protect people from these attacks. This is exactly what we expect from all our partners – from every G7 leader and every country that stands for peace. There must be action. Because as long as Russia does not feel sufficient pressure, it will continue to sow death.

Sally Rooney had to cancel a trip to England to collect a book award to avoid arrest for terrorism under the UK Labour party's legislation against protest about Palestine.

Now all her novels are being withdrawn from sale in the UK to protect her British publisher, Faber, from prosecution for funding terrorism.

She's also at risk of prosecution if she attends any literary event in Derry, Belfast or anywhere else in the six counties.

SpaceX is now requesting 456 launches per year from Boca Chica https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2026-20963.pdf

As my colleague pointed out, that's more than the current launch rate for the world (245 launches so far this year according to https://orbitalradar.com/satellite-launch-log), from a single site that was sold to the public as a testing and development site.

This must become a lesson for the whole world. This is what happens when you rely on the United States as a reliable partner.

As climate change wreaks havoc on wine producers around the world, fossil fuel execs attending Africa Energy Week toast their own success in ruining the planet with bottles labelled 'Drill Baby Drill' 🤮

The irony was not lost on Greenpeace Africa, who brought their own drinks to the party. 🥂

My mastodon instance of 1 user is getting hammered to its limits by AI scrapers.

Gigabytes of cached data and bandwidth for absolutely nothing.

Low disk space. Energy spikes. Memory spikes. CPU spikes. Human labor...

The cost is truly staggering, and this is for a single instance belonging to a single, otherwise insignificant individual.

Imagine the scale of resource abuse, theft, and climate destruction across the internet.

Just so people can use a shitty #AI prompt on their shitty site.

Big news in my little world: next month I’ll become the owner of the bookshop where I work. It’ll be amazing; for now, though, I’m digging into the nuts and bolts of starting a business, because other than the inventory and bookshelves, I’ll basically be starting from scratch.

The biggest decision to make now is what POS system to use, because we’ll do final inventory under the current ownership November 2 to 4 and I’d like to list the inventory in the new system as part of that process. Bookmanager’s waiting list is closed for a year, whereas I’ll be looking for a system to be up and running by the end of this month. Any advice on that? We’re on Shopify now, but I think it might be more than I’m looking for, going forward. The shop is teeny-tiny, and I’m into simplicity (including zero AI) but would like to accept all modes of payment. I’ve heard suggestions for Square, with which my experiences have been mixed in the past, and Basil Lite, which I’d never heard of. . . .

Calling all smaller fedi instances with good moderation, with space for new people!

I'm wanting yo have a workshop where I get people starting on mastodon for the first time and would like to show them a good first time!
