Having an actual sense of humor means you don't have to rely on lazy tropes, especially hateful ones. I agree, that genre of humor sucked. I remember as a little kid wondering WTF was the point of the show "Married With Children." Oh no, he has a house, a beautiful wife, two healthy kids, and in return has to be a husband and father. Such oppression. And I was right-- that show has not aged well! Many people today would kill for Bundy's lifestyle.

@MaryAustinBooks @marronvulpes there’s more to it than that.

Marriage WAS a social prison. Divorce wasn’t legally possible until the 70s to 80s and remained difficult until the 90s in many places. Both parties would usually be left financially ruined; women had almost no financial independence, and men would be forced to pay alimony or lose everything in the divorce. There was enormous social pressure to stay together. And the way marriages formed was often due to said social pressure; men and women alike had enormous pressure to marry, and pregnancy of any kind meant getting married. This often led to people getting married that just had a one-night stand.

Like if I was forced to marry my girlfriend I had at 18, and couldn’t divorce her? Ugh. I’d probably be like “take my wife please haha so funy (no really please help)”

I think humour was the only outlet for an unjust institution

That said! Killing this form of humour is good because it shows how marriage has changed: you marry someone because, GASP, you like them! And you can get divorced. You don’t HAVE to have someone “take” your wife. You can just leave.

@Elizafox @MaryAustinBooks I do have to wonder, how many older people would see this change as a positive and how many would see it as negative. Some people love to be miserable and envy for the younger generations could undermine any potential for happiness.
