    My Zoom F3 talks now.

As a blind field recordist, I've modded the F3's firmware so it speaks: every menu item as you scroll, which option is selected, popups like "SD Card Full!", confirmation dialogs, and even the date and time setup. No sighted help needed.

Would you want a step-by-step guide, with no technical knowledge needed, to put this on your own F3?

What it does today, on F3 firmware 2.20:

    - Speaks the highlighted menu item as you scroll, and the menu name when you enter or leave one
    - Says "selected" on the current value (sample rate, file format, language…)
    - Reads popups: SD Card Full!, Low Battery!, No SD Card!…
    - Reads Execute/Cancel dialogs: format, delete, exit USB audio, factory reset…
    - Talks you through Set Date/Time, even after a flat battery

    Recording and monitoring are untouched.

How it works: a small add-on patched into the F3's own firmware file, installed with Zoom's normal SD card updater. No opening the recorder, no special hardware.

If anything goes wrong, hold Play/Pause while powering on and reinstall Zoom's stock firmware.

The plan is a simple patcher: you give it Zoom's official 2.20 file and it adds the voice. Not affiliated with Zoom.

    Planned next:

    - Voice volume following the volume buttons
    - More screens: file list, file info, SD card tests, timecode
    - All the F3's languages in one firmware (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese), thanks to a voice bank about 10 times smaller
    - The patcher, plus an accessible step-by-step guide

Boosts welcome, especially toward blind F3 owners!

As an aside, it could most likely be very useful to sighted people as well if they want to handle the recorder but don't want to waste time reading the display, as well as make it possible to use the F3 where lighting conditions would otherwise make it tricky to do so.

@xogium Highly interested in this, yes indeed so. Have had an F3 for years and although the iOS app works, can't format cards with it etc. Exciting times.

    @FreakyFwoof Too true, too true.
The firmware itself is the one gating those from the bluetooth side.
Even a custom app for the mac for example wouldn’t help you access the features that are missing from the app, because they're missing from what the bluetooth side exposes.
If you want access to this talking firmware stuff, I can share you the stuff, before it is officially released.
But also, for the love of all that is holy, do not attempt this unless your zoom f3 is already on firmware 2.20 from stock; it might work or might not without it, and I haven't tested.
I'm sure you know the procedure for updates too, but just in case, never power off the device too fast after starting an update. Ideally wait until any AI description stuff confirms that the update is complete, better even if you get a sighted person to help.
    Would you want it?

@xogium Very definitely please and thank you. I'm fine updating firmware and if not I have wife and two kids around if needed, but can usually read with Envision AI, so is all good.
