    "AI has turned coders from architects into janitors!"

    Calm down, Ayn Rand.

    Janitors are an extremely good and useful parts of an organisation. Unlike blame-absorbing meat proxies, which is an extremely bullshit job.

    But let's be clear. Even in a world without AI, if a budget shortfall means letting go of either a coder or a janitor, no functional company would make the janitor redundant.

    You can have an anti AI complaint about your job turning into bullshit without classism. The janitors are on your side in the struggle. The owners aren't. Know who your friends are.

    @celesteh Ok, yes, that, but also, it did dump a bunch of crap onto people's desks that they're supposed to clean up instead of doing their actual jobs.
    Obviously we shouldn't degrade janitors in the process, but cleaning after someone's pet RNG spewing shit everywhere is not what any of us signed up for.

    @flesh @celesteh

    I think this illustrates Charles's point:

    Caught between having us act as putatively highly-status engineers, and having us act as putatively low-status janitors, the company has realised that janitors are far more important and is making that our job.

    That sucks for us, of course, but I think that's because we long to be plumbers rather than janitors: in this metaphor, instead of cleaning up shit from the walls, we want to stop it spraying there in the first place.

    But when shit is on the walls, we all have to abandon our status and go clean up.
