The HomeView is $299. A year ago you could get a the normal iPad (much larger screen) for less than that new (now its $449).

I’ve long used iPads in the kitchen, the screen is great both for recipes and for entertainment (like watching YouTube while cooking).

Given that screens are currently probably the least affected from AI hype computer component crisis, I’m not sure why they didn’t put a larger 4:3 one on there (or make it an option).

If it’s for the kitchen, a lot of people will want to watch cooking videos.

So it seems like the thing is a not very good speaker, a not very good iPad, a not very good videophone and a not very good smart home controller.

Honestly I don’t get why Apple wouldn’t buy HomeAssistant and merge it with their technologies to make it the most amazing thing ever (keep it open source like with WebKit, so other people can build on it).

@thomasfuchs It would terrify me if HA fell into Apple's hands. I would expect Apple to bundle it with their own platforms and promptly discontinue all other hardware support.

@thomasfuchs home Assistant was moved to the open home foundation specifically so something like this would not happen.

through many years Apple has shown that their philosophy on smart home is radically different than home Assistant's.

If they really changed their minds they can just adopt it. It is Licensed under an apache license so they are free to do so.
