    CNN projects Democrats will win the Senate 54-46 on November 3.

    That means full control of both chambers, and Trump's dictatorial rule will come to an end.

    Dear Americans, please make that stick. 🙏🏽

    @randahl I'm 70 years old, and this is the first time I've ever worried that the voters' will might not be carried out. But we're damn well going to give it our best shot.

    @BruceMirken Trump's problem is, he may be able to delay the federal certification of the election, but he cannot prevent the elections in each state themselves, which means we will know the real result, no matter what he does federally.

    Of course he may try to send forces — ICE or others — into blue states to physically prevent the elections from running normally. For that scenario, I hope the states are keeping their powder dry. Literally.

    @randahl Me too. They're all saying they have plans, but are understandably not discussing details publicly. It may come down to how crazy Trump gets and whether the military will follow illegal orders. Hegseth's purges of generals are no doubt intended to improve the odds of that.

    @BruceMirken another attack vector that worries me is the red states.

    Trump could place ICE at polling places in the red states to create a perceived threat that would make some people of certain ethnicities stay away, which could lead to fewer blue votes.

    Red governors could refuse to prevent Trump from doing this — potentially at a huge political cost to themselves, but still.

    @randahl

    Overstated.

    Not full control. Many actions require 60 senate votes. Judges for example. SCOTUS judges.

    Impeachment conviction requires 66 votes in the Senate.

    (Impeachment in the House is essentially "bringing charges")

    As examples.

    AND ------

    And trump's dictatorial power will have SOME restraints. Just some.

    SCOTUS has given the already very powerful office, FAR MORE POWER.

    November is "a chance to have a chance."

    Not a cure.

    'Governs by executive order' is also overstated, but yes. It will.get more chaotic in the WH.

    Google CHOSE to insult Canada by changing the text name on Lake Ontario. Trump's exec order only constrains gov Dept's.

    @kevinrns@mstdn.social @randahl@mastodon.social Google chose it because it was threatened to lose government contracts. And making (or breaking) those contracts is still an Executive Branch function... Congress does have the power of the purse, yes, but Congress can't do much if a president makes an executive order to instruct the Executive Branch to cancel all contracts with Alphabet.

    As such, IMHO all government contracts are a liability.

    Nah, it won't. There will be tantrums and fascist theatre, medical emergencies, arrests and headlines.

    But reaching 30 in polls, and supporting candidates removing Trumpinalia.

    The project has realised the Trump clown is driving away even the merch buyers.

    An assumption of the tumour's ability to rebound is no longer warranted, hes just wildly dangerous.

    @kevinrns that is true. But still infinitely better than just winning the House.

    For instance, Democrats will have the ability and resources to initiate investigations into every crime he commits and expose him. And while they cannot convict the president without 2/3 majority, they can still block all funding for Trump's government.

    @kevinrns

    My biggest hope is that a revitalised House and Senate will push through effective Bills that actually help people (not billionaires).

    If Trump vetos a Bill, it takes a 2/3 majority of Senators 𝘢𝘯𝘥 2/3 majority of Reps voting to veto the veto.

    That's doable, in a world where Trump has become a terminal lame duck.

    @kevinrns

    Not 67.

    2/3 of members present at the time of the vote.

    That makes a difference, especially in a game where politicians will gladly be somewhere else if they don't want to be seen supporting something.

    @randahl Musk is gonna help them steal again if he can. The problem is, they know how from last time. If you've never looked at Election Truth Analysis, check it out. Nathan Taylor is the guy who has been examining the 2024 election for anomalies. It's interesting. Peace.

    @randahl @deeje if they win, and don’t impeach and convict in the first 45 days and then spend at least half the rest of the time convicting everyone else, I will burn their houses down.

    @randahl Please, people of the US. Do every thing you can to vote and everything you can to verify and protect the election process.
    That said, make plans because you don't just vote these guys away. They are not gonna leave because of vote numbers. They put the knife on the table this round and said democracy is over. They are only going along with elections at all because the machine is automatic and a good distraction. Organize, protect the vulnerable, and don't forget to make it fun.

    @randahl Here is the thing, this is untrue. Even if the Dems won 66 seats in the senate, they are going to do their damnedest to not do a damn thing and resist the section of the party that actually wants change. Not because they are all corrupt, but because the institution itself is unfit for purpose and it would take 66 actual progressives to do the job you describe.

    Just read through the comments here, and particularly those saying "not enough..."

    Well, that's just not true. Sure, not enough to completely repair everything instantly, but control of the Senste like that (and the House) would end this administration's reign of horror. There would be subpoena power with teeth and legal consequences for those who have been breaking the law.

    Is it enough. No. But it would definitely be the beginning, provided Schumer is replaced with a true leader.

    @phl part of the reason is, in the Senate only one third of the seats are up for reelection every two years, so a significant switch is unlikely by design.

    @randahl Polls and pundits have been spectacularly wrong in almost every election for the last 10 years, people just don't respond to polls and all of the massaging they do to, well, invent data that isn't there makes the margin of error essentially unknown.

    I'd love to believe this fairy tale, but living here I can tell you there is no way the Dems gain a Senate majority. As in 1930s Germany, the last decade has exposed the wide support fascism has in "the land of the free”. 😞

    @randahl

    The making it stick is the real challenge, despite everything we've seen and all the consequences of the past 40+ years politics, there is a powerful, bipartisan demographic of our political establishment that wants things to go right back to how they were before Trump. Which, ironically, would guarantee another far worse Trump in several years time.

    If we're to be done with Trump and the conservatives/fascists for good it will take transformation, rather than restoration.
