Today I learned a lot about #passkeys, part of which is that there is a lot of misinformation about passkeys going around.

Mostly I learned that passkeys are VULNERABLE to misrepresentation because so few people actually understand how they work. 😂

But the video I just boosted was really helpful, as were the voluminous replies in various threads in my feeds today.

I am feeling confident enough in my understanding now to try creating my first one 😬 in a password manager, of course.

    Thanks, fedi, for teaching me!

@scott The one thing that resonates with me is that it's much more cumbersome to share a passkey with another person than to share a password. And since a password manager and TOTP are very much Good Enough for most scenarios, there just isn't enough motivation in it for me to use them.

@Gargron ah yes, there are still some use cases for shared passwords… good point.

However… today I learned a bit about how one’s password manager can act as the “authenticator” mechanism. So with your passkey synced via your password manager, you can still login from different devices.

Anyway I already use shared passwords AND shared TOTP codes all synced through the password manager. Works super well.

So if passkeys sync as painlessly then I will be more open to them. Will have to test!
