Yandex data centers getting bombed is unambiguously good for the world
it will likely be quite a while before anyone has any real numbers correlating that with, like, disinformation and all that stuff. we've seen a lot of claims around that but none with plausible sources as yet, and the researchers who do that kind of analysis take quite a while to be sure of things before publishing
but that company is so aggressively committed to doing harm. like... sometime when we're rested we'll vent about their privacy policy, maybe... not that there's much to say, it barely exists
it's just nice to hear about the actual enemies of humanity actually facing consequences for once

But Yandex data centres being a relevant source for bots doesn't surprise me, though I doubt the numbers are quite as extreme as people are showing right now

@helle thus far we have yet to see anything which withstands reading the y-axis, let alone looking for an actual source for the claimed data
but yeah
@helle any time we see a zoomed-in graph we look at various zoomed-out versions of the same data to get a sense of what's normal and test our ability to reason about it
when that's not available... well.

It will be very interesting to see what plausible sources for that information are even available these days. Do we have to rely on someone’s twitter scraping to measure the drop in disinfo activity?

@ireneista it will definitely be interesting to see what happens from this especially right around the US midterms.
You can hope anti bot countermeasures will block most of the trolls. Or you can send a few cruise missiles instead of asking nicely.
@ireneista I'm curious if the main motivation of the attacks was economic (i.e. hurting the Russian tech sector in general) or if the troll farms were an intentional target and they decided might as well take out the rest of the datacenter too
@ireneista or if perhaps there was a specific military target doing like drone C&C or weapons design that ran stuff in yandex cloud and that was the main target

@ireneista oh for sure. But i would expect there was probably a specific target somebody wanted to take out, be it "yandex as a whole" or a specific thing hosted there, that motivated the attack originally.
They're certainly not going to complain about any of it.

@ireneista The Guardian did an article today, citing an expert who follows disinformation. No change.
But it does disrupt Russian life without killing anyone, which is kinder than what Ukrainians have been experiencing.
