These kinds of emoji changes are always fascinating to me from a textual preservation context. The tone of a message changes if you change the appearance of emoji characters - is the presentation of an archived messaging using something like this using the original visual context? The present day context?
The hairy heart was platform specific, but there are other changes like the gun emoji turning into a squirt gun - what does a message look like if you render it with a contemporary font?

@mcc Oh is THAT why they changed the direction! I honestly hadn’t considered that.

@misty I have no insider information to suggest this is true but also: I am convinced that is it

@misty Wait hold on. According to this Apple has never changed the direction of the emoji. Why did I think they had? https://emojipedia.org/pistol#designs

@thomasjwebb @mcc Looks like it *did* flip direction in internal builds, but they reverted it back to the original direction in the final iOS 10 release.

@thomasjwebb @misty I mean, I don't use any Apple devices, so I don't have any way of knowing these things, I have to rely on user reports.

@thomasjwebb @mcc That seems like a very plausible way for that kinda false memory to form!

@thomasjwebb @misty I have extremely clear memories of seeing a news article demonstrating before and after with a direction flip. I'm very confused.

@griotspeak @thomasjwebb @misty if you'll look carefully at the (long) thread, misty was discussing that first and then i branched into a discussion of the gun direction

@mcc @thomasjwebb @misty Ahem, my bad
I even *read* that post but then closed the app because life and later opened it up and then didn’t read all the way back again.
