Oct 11, 2026, 10:54 AM@edithmair1 Unfortunately the vulnerabilities that allowed this to become a problem in the first place will almost certainly remain even with those.
Consider the viability of a European credit card which cannot be used with any companies with a presence in the United States. So while it would make things better than they are, and is worth pursuing for that even if it's not a perfect solution, even a fully European card issuer would still almost certainly need to adhere to US regulations to some degree, and that includes US entity sanctions.
As for a European Amazon, I really don't think we need a huge, too-big-to-fail company copying a US behemoth. What we need is companies providing standardised services that can realistically be implemented in the same way by anyone without reliance on any one party, so that we don't end up with a hard dependency on just some other company instead. That would not be learning our lesson.

- Look not just as #VISA / #MasterCard / #AMEX, but also Mir, #SEPA, #AliPay, #WeChatPay and UnionPay…
- But espechally look at #Monero and how it works, since it's the closest to digital cash there is.
- And as long as any #payment system is a substantial #downgrade to #cash in terms of #privacy, #fungibility & #accessibility, it'll fail.
- In effect, what you actually want is something like the PaySafeCard classic, PASMO, Suica and have a #EU & #Global system of mutual acceptance similar to what #Japan has for their transit cards and the Dutch OV Chipcaart.

@meles @edithmair1 @CStamp @rightsprung @pixelunion If I as @ecb had to design and standardize such a System, I'd basically copy #Monero but merely change the Block Frequency to 1 second (so that worst-case it only takes 3 seconds to get a transaction fully confirmed.) and make it a #Prepaid-#NFC wallet that can be reload manually or automatically (with like a default limit of €100/day or €25 per transactions without PIN and €1000/day or €250 per transaction in total) since most people will do anything higher cash or #SEPA wire transfer anyway and thus make it unattractive for #MoneyLaundering…
- That way it'll be #anonymous yet #secure against tampering and balance fraud (which is the critical part for any payment system: That accepting merchants get their money!) and could operate at sub-cent fees per transaction (or make the fee a fixed 2¢ for <€25 [which is equivalent to 4,8s @ €15/hr wage])…
- OFC the payment system would guarantee payment on top of it…
