@martinvermeer @LaNaehForaday It's not a coincidence. Zionism in the late 19th/early 20th century Austro-Hungarian empire was just one of a ferment of ethno-nationalist movements: it relied on the same axioms as its peers, only applying to Jews as opposed to Czechs, Hungarians, etc, and bolted it on top of the crass 19th century imperialist colonialism of the European empires. There was a rival non-colonialist Jewish movement—the Bund—but Hitler murdered them when they didn't flee in time.

@cstross Wait, serious question: there are people arguing that Netanyahu is not far right?
That has to be bad faith, or one of those attempts at rules-lawyering sophistry.

@jlouiseau I think the only person making that argument is Netanyahu himself. Points finger at Itamar Ben-Gvir: "*I'm* not right wing, *he's* right wing!"

@cstross Netanyahu is the most //extreme right// wing. In October 1995 he stood on a Jerusalem balcony above a crowd chanting "death to Rabin," under posters of Prime Minister Rabin in a Nazi SS uniform printed by Kahanists, a militant right-wing terror group Israel had outlawed the year before, even after the head of the Shin Bet had warned him in person it would end in death.

A month later Rabin was assassinated. Seven months after that, Netanyahu took Rabin's job.

Rabin's widow said of the posters and the chants that Netanyahu stood there and didn't stop it. She demanded he admit his error before she would ever sit with him. He never did. Three years on, when he laid a wreath at Rabin's grave as prime minister, the crowd shouted that he had incited the murder.

@jabgoe2089 The Israeli far-right *like* anti-semitism because they're essentially fascists who believe in eternal struggle—and that they will win: meanwhile Jews who reject their toxic version of zionism are frozen out and left vulnerable to the neighbours.
