@freya we can't take em back but we can't allow new ones to siphon our resources

here in my city we had huge protests against data centres that were proposed. we stopped it dead in the water and members of the provincial government are proposing a ban on new data centres for commercial AI.

@freya we also need to put legislation in place about their effects on the power grid and the towns they are situated in. they take seriously huge amount of resources to operate

@freya yeah i think there are some (albeit edge case) benefits to machine learning. but we *really* have to get out of this whole commercialization and widespread AI fad. its proving disastrous for everyone.

ideally these companies responsible for the forcing of generative AI into all of our lives will be seized, broken up, repurposed for public benefit.

@freya yeah thats fair. i do think there needs to be a lot more nuance in this. the problem is how its been forced into everyone's lives without consent

@freya@social.highenergymagic.net @akana@tech.lgbt I'm very heavily anti current LLMs, and to be completely honest this is definitely a tough question. I can, of course, see how the accessibility improvements can be huge... but I can also see very strong arguments for why they still don't outweigh the harms of corporate LLMs. Accessibility doesn't have infinite value from a utilitarian standpoint, and oh boy do these machines of copyright violation make a very strong case for how an unethical enough tool can outweigh the benefits of accessibility.

Overall, I still find any of the modern models in use
incredibly unethical, and I sincerely hope that they crash and burn for their horrific training data practices. The future of ethically trained models is bright if we just cut the techno fascists who are perfectly happy to be entirely unethical out.
