@delawen @Netzblockierer @weekendspy that's my motto: people have to have hobbies.

People crave deeply to believe objectively untrue things. A purpose, a meaning. Being part of a plan and a greater whole. An agent of compassion and mercy and salvation. A validating peer group and a party.

It's a rich part of human experience and not usually harmful.

For me it's only a problem when children's fingers bleed. Or when they push up these fraudulent dipshits like Hegseth.

    (Decriminalize drugs too)

At least for me I think there is a difference between first generation and following generations of atheists.

My parents are atheists. So religion entered my life at a later stage as a weird cultural thing other people had.

To me it is not only optional, but strange. Alien. Difficult to understand.

Which doesn't mean I think religious people are stupid or bad.

I just know life can be perfectly fine and happy without it.

And I feel/guess that atheists that were raised on religious households feel it different.

Because they had to eliminate religion from their lives. It was not the default. They had to unlearn several things.

The people that I have seen walking that path go far... but there's always some traces being drag.

It is difficult to untangle everything.

Even I have cultural "taint" I can't completely eliminate.

@delawen @janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy And yet you used some pretty "subtle" language to put religious people down.

I too was brought up without religion. Technically my father was Catholic and my mother Buddhist, but neither really did anything religious in life except for secular observance of Christmas. I too am an atheist (small-a).

Not once have I ever been moved to use "subtle" contrastive, underhanded put-downs like "the ones that are mentally healthy and strong."

    You misunderstood me completely.

I was referring to the atheists that were raised with no religion at all. And of those subset, the ones that are mentally healthy and strong. Not all atheists.

I wasn't saying anything about the mental state of religious people there.

@janvenetor @delawen @Netzblockierer @weekendspy something specific that I think religion *can* (but doesn't always) offer is a space for people to meet and socialize in a community. This is something that doesn't really have a good secular replacement, and I think it is beneficial to have something to fill that space.
