As the tribute to the Hip closed out the night's ceremonies, a purple feathered hat hung on a microphone stand on stage, a nod to Downie's eclectic fashion. Allison Russell, who was among the artists performing the Hip's music, blew a kiss to the mic stand as she began Wheat Kings, then ended the song by saying, "We will always love you, Gord."

Sep 29, 2026, 12:23 AM@drakakis Watched a bootleg video of the performance and cried. Wheat Kings I would argue is the quintessential Canadian song. When you hear it you can't help but sing it and if you're in front of a camp fire even better. No band has ever found the specific wavelength of an entire country like the Tragically Hip.
I miss and love you Gord.
