    I don't see that many kids using the #fediverse right now, even for something like pixelfed, or loops, or peertube.

    Big instances on fediverse look like "small social network" in the EU categorization.
    Maybe the rules will apply just to "big" commercial operators.

    But let's say all those people from X and IG and TikTok and Youtube all came to mastodon and mastodon became the great thing in Europe.

    If they will start to ask for age verification there, people will start using something like #holos where everyone is doing self hosting just from their phone/app.

    Age verification became then the bare possibility to own a phone and a sim card, it should have always be like that.

    just in order to see an interesting thing, if you don't know it already,
    give an eye to #holossocial , which is a relatively new app.

    holos.social/

    It's not 100% selfhosting on your smartphone, but it's as close as it can be to just install a client app.
    Everyone can do it, if people will ever do it it's another story.
    But can be installed by literally anyone.

    I found it very innovative.
    It's a pity that you need to have a relay server.
    I'm not convinced it's needed at all, should be optional.

    I selfhost mastodon in my broadband, the occasional me being offline, or ip changet is not a big deal.

    Fediverse server goes offline for maintenance/update all the time, and no one but their local users, notice.
    The others servers just queue messages.
    With a dynamic dns service like dyndns
    - you don't even need to own a proper domain
    - an occasional change of ip translate in a downtime of some 5-10 minutes, just the time for the dns to propagate your server.dyndns.org

    @luca the EU Kids Act draft doesn't take reasonable things like that into account. It will hit the Fediverse as hard as Instagram with the current wording.
