I decided to try a simple, obvious reverse route through the woods near my village today in an attempt to work out how, on my first run there, I turned 5k into 10k by getting lost. Still got lost but at least I know that the “Private Drive” to a farmhouse is also a public right of way. And this time I only added around 1k to the planned route by stumbling around in the undergrowth. Some additional comments in the alt text of the photos. #Running #RunnersOfMastodon

A vaguely visible trail through undergrowth within an area of woodland. This is meant to be a well signposted walking trail.
A path through woodland with faint signs of vehicular use which was comforting when I wondered how I could be rescued if I fell and injured myself!
A trail along the edge of a field of something (I’m not crop-educated). Most of the trail also welcomed brambles and stinging nettles and my legs are not thanking me for any of this.
The driveway leading from a farmhouse to a road. Not shown in the photos is that on the gateposts, visible from the road, are signs saying “Private Drive” and nothing about it being a public right of way for walking and running which is why my first attempt to run through the woods involved a massive diversion.
