Aug 25, 2026, 8:00 PMThe supply chain is so bad right now that the only RAM I could find came as a DIY kit.

@SnoopJ this is what I get for trying to put Miso on a diet

@dan So cute! My family had a Macintosh 512ke when I was a kid. I think it might still be in our attic somewhere.

steve cooleystevecooley@mastodon.socialAug 26, 2026, 2:31 AM@dan yeah but sheesh you bought a lot. Leave some for the data centers!
Aug 26, 2026, 12:16 PM@dan ah no, they just do that because DIY kits don't have to be electrically certified, it shaves a couple bucks off the cost
HowToPhilhowtophil@oldbytes.spaceAug 26, 2026, 12:26 PM@dan I think the RAM shortage sets up the potential for "single-system image clustering" like OpenMosix to make a "serious" comeback
Aug 26, 2026, 1:43 PM@dan have you... Taken bites out of it???

@k you can't truly appreciate a semiconductor until you've appreciated it with all five senses

Aug 26, 2026, 2:21 PM@dan@discuss.systems it looks nice waow! is it expensive and heavy?

@Stellar about 10lb and $100

@dan #IBM donated a 300mm wafer silicon monocrystal to the #Arithmeum #Bonn because it has a "hairline crack" about two atoms wide vertically and it wasn't economical for them to recycle it.

loptalopta@mastodon.socialAug 26, 2026, 3:49 PM@dan Some assembly required?
diana 🏳️⚧️🦋🌱dianea@lgbtqia.spaceAug 26, 2026, 9:23 PMI could make so many 4096 bit DRAM chips from that 😺
- Dan PortsdanAug 26, 2026, 9:47 PM
@dianea I think I have a bunch of those in my garage!
(Left over from a digital logic class 25 years ago that used technology that was pretty outdated even at the time!)
- diana 🏳️⚧️🦋🌱dianea@lgbtqia.spaceAug 26, 2026, 9:50 PM
If I remember correctly, if the defective chips could be relabeled as 2048 bit DRAM, more than doubling yield.
