    "I will never forgive the people who decided to migrate university mail servers to Outlook. This was both incompetence and malice on a terrifying level because there were enough warnings and opposition from very competent people at the time. Yet they decided to destroy one of the university’s core infrastructures and historical foundations"

    well said ...

    @tomkalei I work for [redacted] publishing. Our email and office documents are all hosted on Microsoft. I expect one day we’ll publish something the US president disapproves of and everything will get locked down, and our C suite will tell us “there was no way for us to know this was going to happen/to prevent this”. Meanwhile NextCloud is *right there*.

    @tomkalei

    this may well be true; I don't know anything about mail servers

    but

    on the other hand, my memory of the 2000 era is that the conventional wisdom was that university bureacrats and tech staff were, by and large, of course with exceptions, totally inept

    @tomkalei Also worth noting, here in Quebec like many places, MS has a stranglehold on the entire education system from primary to secondary through college and university. You have to use MS to authenticate logging into MS just to get onto college networks. Ever since Covid we got sold into Teams, which now comes with built in AI. There is literally no data sovereignty, MS has openly stated it will defer to any US legal action first and foremost regardless of the sensitivity of data it shares.

    @tomkalei that's the thing: the warnings came from competent people, the same the ai magnates try to eradicate.
