What brought this to mind is that the group that picks up compost from our house operates in a manner that - well, let me put it this way: we know the name of the person who handles dispatch. She responds to us personally when we request new bags. She just emailed us personally to test out why some automatic mail wasn't working. Sometimes when we forget to take our bin the 20 feet out to the curb, the drivers will just, come get it from where they know it is

This is a municipal service, it's a waste service, but we legitimately love it.

@ricci this is how we got involved with the nonprofit! Our local CSA is the kind of place where the owners know everyone and they just pack the bags based on everyone’s food requirements and they know all the farmers who just show up and bring the produce. And I was in the store talking to the owner and she mentioned a long time ago that she wanted to do a nonprofit and now it’s happening!

@ricci this weekend I was sitting in the store, working and listened to the following by exchange:
Store owner: what do you have?
    Farmer: 130lbs of chestnuts
Owner: ok, bring it on in, how should we store it?
    Farmer: cool place
Owner: ok we have the walk-in
Farmer: no, somewhere humid, like outside
Owner: ok, the back of the store?
    Farmer: it’s too warm
Owner: ok what is the ideal temp?
Farmer: 34 degrees and 85% humidity
    Owner: … ok..
Farmer: like a wood shed, if you have a wood shed or under a tree.
Owner: ok.. I’m gonna put it in the walk in but I promise we’ll deliver them soon

    @ricci

These types of interactions are dangerous. They lead to community building.

This is why no tech advancements are being allowed to reduce our work hours. Everybody has to be kept as precarious and frantic as possible so we don't get the time or energy for this sort of thing.

    It's important.

@ricci We use a wash-and-fold laundry service that picks up dirty laundry and delivers clean laundry. They're the best because if I forget to put my laundry out, this guy named Ron texts me to see if I have laundry that day. He also personally texted me when my credit card on file expired. Texting with Ron is so much better than using some stupid fucking app that wants me to enable notifications
