Lovely little video of a chap (in Germany or somewhere German speaking) dealing with people standing on the ridged lines used by cane using blind people:

It sounds like it's winding up. Please wind it up. Pleaaaaasssse

I've already turned around and caught his eye.

It seems like a deep conversation about a third person. It's all in English.

I would much prefer to be able to tune him out but I cannot. I don't want to listen to music to drown him out.

I also don't want to go and interrupt and confront him.

Sigh.

May I moan about the guy who is speaking loudly at length on the phone in the space between carriages, whose voice and the voice of the person on the other end is carrying loudly into the quiet carriage.

I can hear him through earplugs.

I can't stop my brain from trying to follow his conversation.

Had an excellent time at @fronteers.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy Dark Mode yesterday.

For an industry that feels uncertainly balanced on top of the AI bubble, and is collectively very tired of the topic - it helps so so so much to connect and bond with other humans.

We get by with a little help from our friends 💛

Just one person triggers the tipping point on a large social issue. We can affect people three degrees of separation away, people we'll never meet.

My eldest is enjoying it, but it does require some description of context of various words and phrases - and it's sort of remarkable that a lot of the tech in the first H2G2 book exists today...

The guide is an ebook reader with lots of buttons.

Zaphod Beeblebrox was filmed by a circling drone.

There was a time I was part of their kids' club Storm Force, knew the names of all of the different boat classes, could rattle off RNLI statistics.

At that time their funding was coming largely from legacy donations (money left in will upon death) of people who were/whose partners were in the navy.

That was ~30 years ago, money came heavily from WW2 widows. I'm not privy to their finances nowadays, I do wonder how they are doing.

I would be surprised if they don't need more donations. Otherwise they may have to go to the mountain rescue model, where the rescued have to pay off a debt to them.

I used to have a close connection to the work of the RNLI - these are wonderful people who are saving lives at sea. They also train UK lifeguards, of which I saw many this summer.

They're not very visible to those who don't live by the UK coastline, but they are a charity and welcome every penny.

Just seen someone use 'nonce' casually to describe someone being not very clever.

This is British slang for a pedophile. Please know what you're saying about people when you say it.

Wtf where did "Cotton Eye Joe" just come from? Worst earworm

Reposting to add ALT text and to salute the use of Weeley for Bin HQ, and the pie chart!

"We have the votes to consume Reform" is followed by the chart where all other votes (31.6%) plus did-not-votes (41.3%) are the shape of Pacman at 72.9% of the pie. It's ready to chomp the 27.1% Reform wedge!

My eldest (8) recently got a Monopoly game set and has been enjoying learning how to play, and then ruthlessly beat me the first two times we played!

Finally today I managed to turn the tables and beat him, after a game that looked like it was going his way for the first half. Muahaaha.

I wrote a somewhat annoyed comment on a @fireship.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy video:

Getting tired of everything being done by "some guy" tbh.

I'll give TimBL a pass, though.

People in the US can't understand why Europeans don't all have AC in the heat.

"Climate change is driving up temperatures around the world - but particularly in Europe. It is the fastest warming continent, heating up twice as fast as the global average, according to the Copernicus climate service."

Are live subtitling and image description powered by LLMs also considered generative AI?

Or can we separate them out as "descriptive" AI?

And another branch is "agentic" AI, right?

Or do they all overlap?

Descriptive AI is an accessibility win. Maybe agentic, too. Generative can get in the sea.
