I got a call from someone I don't know.

"Hi. We have a FreeBSD server. It's been working perfectly for years, but it hasn't been updated since then. We asked AI to update it, but now it won't boot anymore. It didn't even make a backup before starting. The AI keeps trying things, everything is down, and we've already spent over €500 in tokens. Can you help us?"

"Sure. €500, plus the time it'll take me to try to fix it. Assuming it can still be fixed and nothing important has been deleted."

"That much?"

Some silence.

"Well, I hope AI takes your job away!" And he hung up.

Believing that autopilot automatically makes you an invulnerable professional pilot will ruin far more people than job losses will.

I don't know if AI will take my job away, but it's already cost them €500 and, probably, their server.

Deep cleaning of the office during the weekend. I, and apparently a few others, forgot to mark their office chair. Now we're trying to figure out where each persons chair is. It breaks the monotony.

They'll keep on pushing #chatcontrol until they win. This makes me extremely sad about (European) democracy. Repeatedly voting on the same thing until you win is recognized as anti-democratic. And yet.

Should we move to @libreoffice? Can we get some honest reviews (by DM if you like!) of people's experiences with it?

Abstract Data

Guess who's just been told the company probably won't hire them after uni 🥳

I never saw myself staying here for the long term, but with the current job market and ✨️ overall situation ✨️ it would have been nice to start out with some security.

My next mid term goal was ending up at some accelerator facility like the GSI, I'm guessing that is getting moved up now.
Do I know anyone here in Darmstadt?

why do you set goals for yourself?

My mobile office en-route to NDC TechTown. Got a lot of work done on my presentation.

Do you boost polls on Mastodon?

One of the interesting things when developing SW for new HW is that sometimes that really really weird bug actually is a HW fault. Fortunately the HW developers are in the same room.

Help my poor memory.

Early 90s, probably 1991, data compression was cool. The most widely used program, to the degree that that expression makes sense, was 'zoo''. None of the now popular algorithms were invented yet.

There was a startup company that guaranteed at least 50% compression for any data. VC hype wasn't much of a thing yet, fortunately, but they still squeezed investors for money for surprisingly long before throwing in the towel and admitting failure.

Anyone remembers the company?

A lot of people don't know there's two fundamentally different types of PTSD and/or have heard the terms but don't understand the distinction being made. There's "standard" PTSD, which I'll call "simplex" PTSD, and "complex" PTSD, which you'll see written C-PTSD.

- Simplex ("normal") PTSD results from a sudden shocking life event, such as a car crash, robbery, house fire, job loss or unexpected death. It can happen to anyone at any point in their life. The recovery prospects are very good: most people feel much better after several months of safety and reassurance from their loved ones. However, without support, people can get stuck (being afraid for the rest of their life to drive because of a car crash, for example)

- Complex PTSD results from long-term slow-burn distress that can't be pinpointed to any one moment of absolute horror. For example, being raised by abusive parents who lash out over minor things, habitually bullied at school, or subjected to hateful religious indoctrination. C-PTSD mostly forms in children, who do not yet have the means or life experience to escape a toxic situation. It can form in previously untraumatized adults in extreme situations that can't be escaped, such as warfare, cults or a hostage situation (including an extremely controlling romantic partner). C-PTSD children grow up to be deeply distressed adults who blame themselves for being unable to function well.

Unfortunately, C-PTSD doesn't "simply" get better with a few months of support. That's why it's "complex". It fundamentally reshapes your mind to expect constant threat, punishment and misery. It takes years of patience, persistence, and determination to climb out of the pit others dug for you.

I hope this post has helped someone better understand themselves or a suffering loved one.

The German fascist party AfD has filed a criminal defamation complaint against Chancellor Friedrich Merz, for saying that "the word 'remigration' is nothing other than a synonym for ethnic cleansing based on origin and skin color" before the Bundestag.

Dear Fediverse, I've never asked for boosts, but it's time to flood the zone. Put it in your own words if you prefer. Spread it everywhere.
