Guess who's just been told the company probably won't hire them after uni 🥳

I never saw myself staying here for the long term, but with the current job market and ✨️ overall situation ✨️ it would have been nice to start out with some security.

My next mid term goal was ending up at some accelerator facility like the GSI, I'm guessing that is getting moved up now.
Do I know anyone here in Darmstadt?

@phako I'll be perfectly honest I feel more comfortable in nuclear physics than particle physics.
Plus, Darmstadt would be a lot closer to some friends than Hamburg.

    But thanks for the link!

@gigabecquerel as a city it’s alright if you’re okay with smallish cities. Be aware that GSI isn’t in Darmstadt proper but in Wixhausen, which is a 20 minute car trip from most places in Darmstadt. There is public transport, but I wouldn’t rely on that as it’s slow and much less reliable than e.g. in Berlin.

@gigabecquerel what degree do you have? If you can’t find something at one of the accelerators right away, if you haven’t already maybe a PhD would be an option?

@jaseg I'm actually looking for a smaller city, and regarding flat prices, comparing to munich it can only get better :D

I've been looking around in Wixhausen, looks like both GSI and Darmstadt-City are easy to reach by bike, and bus if needed.

I've only got a bachelors in engineering physics, but I'm not looking for something academic, I'd be very happy with a technicians role / doing maintenance, as long as I get to do practical work.

@gigabecquerel oh god yeah it's not going to be nearly as bad as munich!

Biking is pretty dangerous in Darmstadt, there's less infrastructure compared to Munich.

@jaseg I just really don't want to have to own a car.
I'm ok with ocasionally renting one if needed but I'd never want to drive it on a daily basis.

@jaseg @gigabecquerel The danger very much depends on your route. If you don't mind taking the field paths, there's beautiful routes through the forest. No or very few cars to be seen.
You just want to avoid the big arterial roads (especially their crossings) in the city center.
Lots of people arrive to the GSI by bike. (Or at least they did, I haven't checked in years)

@jaseg @gigabecquerel the bike lanes from North of DA to Wixhausen are OK, though. You'd probably wouldn't bike much within DA itself, but from one of the closer train stations to GSI and back.
