Do you enjoy discussion panels at programming conferences?
Watching a Scala talk and can't get over how overwhelmingingly complex the syntax is #funcProgConf
something that became obviously important about Muse while i was writing this up is like... how many servers were there that ran Ubuntu before? millions? tens of millions? Muse had reached 3 million weekly users on September 30th, 3 weeks after it launched. Meta is pushing it aggressively on their 3.5 billion users, and if even a fraction of them end up even logging in once and connecting their stuff, then the number of live Ubuntu systems with valuable secrets multiplies by severalfold - but unlike all the other Ubuntu machines, they have a totally homogenous package surface, are administered by nobody, and used by amateurs through a random number generator that resorts to yoloing random binaries from the web almost as a first resort.
so anyway, Muse increases the attractiveness of a supply chain attack on Ubuntu, and the upstream Debian systems by ........ a lot.
Up early to head to Stockholm to speak at Clojure Café tonight, and to attend #FuncProgConf tomorrow. Tickets still available!
I'll be speaking about #Datastar and how to use it with Clojure.
Happy Sunday! Here's a site I've built because I've been thinking about this and want to see more of it in the world: a space for describing and sharing scholarly skills that I've picked up and nurtured over the years.
Also this is a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it and no using it.
If you want to know how expensive the Belgian post is, I'll just say that it's literally 10x cheaper to mail a postcard from Taiwan to the EU, than from Belgium.
The ostrich has the lowest brain-to-bodymass ratio of any living bird. An ostrich eye is actually larger than an ostrich brain, and less than a third of their (very small) cranial real estate houses brain.
And yet, no ostrich has ever written an opinion piece about how Claude is conscious and has a soul.
lately I've been digging into one of my favorite hobbies from my past: scouring libraries for digitized old maps. here's an amazing one I found of the geology of NJ from 1950. #cartography
source: https://dep.nj.gov/njgws/technical/historical-maps/#1950-geologic-map (unfortunately you'll need a VPN if you try to view this from Europe)
Next week I'm going to Sweden for a conference, and I'll give a talk at a Clojure meetup. The week after I'm traveling to Taiwan with my bike for a three week bike trip. But I'll also do two talks (for the dbt meetup and the Clojure meetup) so I am in the aaaaaaaaahhhh stage of travel prep.
If you saw "&c" used in a text / slide, would you know what it means?
Went scouting in Mechelen for @heartconf today. Took some snaps.
Anyway if your language had actual macros you could have your developer affordances and still just ship precompiled css to the client.
I sound like a conspiracy theorist sometimes when I say that mainstream IT is so incredibly dumb and inefficient, but it's all stuff like this but nested like infinite babushkas.

People who know their stuff could've told you 8 years ago that css-in-js was a bad idea. But SV startup bros have to do it anyway because "developer affordance" or something. And then eight years later they get applause for finally admitting it was a terrible idea all along.

"The tragedy is not that Firefox is a bad browser.
The tragedy is that Firefox became a good browser after millions of people had stopped caring."
I'm a loyal Firefox user on desktop and mobile, have been for years, but man is it painful to see over a decade of Mozilla self-owns laid out like that.
