All my recovered lithium cells are balanced, and they seem to accept the power bank housing I've placed them into. Next step will be to see if they charge, which I do very gently with recovered cells.

It's so weird having a dysfunctional brain reward circuit. I guess that's an AuDHD thing?

In any case, I've achieved all the goals I set for today, and the result is that I feel no sense of achievement, only tired and icky because all the goals were state bureaucracy related rather than anything I attach personal value to.

Or maybe nobody feels good achieving goals they don't personally believe in. Idk.

Omg, my favourite bird now has a portrait!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖

Very tired of interacting with The State right now. 2026 has been the Year of Bureaucracy.

I've been saying since the 2000s that it's important that every big software stack have at least one angry new software grad to fight back against entrenched complexity in the existing codebase.

sometimes there is a good reason why we can't "just do X, Y, or Z" but someone should be still raising the question, damn it

Meta's "Wonder" model that they just released today is a this tier computer use model

Hey friends,

If you have tech skills—and many of you do—look for ways to reach out to your communities and help them de-enshittify their lives, even if it's just a little.

Help them install uBlock Origin. Introduce them to F-Droid. Consider setting up NextCloud or Immich for your family or neighbours. Show them alternatives like DuckDuckGo or Fastmail. If they're on Windows then help move them to Mint¹ or run Win11Debloat². Help them join Mastodon.

Talk to your local library or community centre about running a free session.

One of the impacts of enshittification is that it intentionally keeps people away from even hearing about alternatives. I genuinely feel the place to fix that is on the local level. We keep each other safe.

¹ Or whatever Linux/BSD distro is most friendly these days.

In case you're wondering about the future of art in the era of AI, today I learned about Scarlet Deer Inn, a videogame where the characters were animated with *embroidery*

New #Brisbane #Olympics logo just dropped.

(Stolen from elsewhere on the internet)

Today I have gratitude for Mr 9 loudly proclaiming "[my brother] is planning his D&D session, so you *know* he's not going to shower", thereby causing Mr 11 to shower out of spite.

Going to get this Optimus Prime costume so that I can justify spending Halloween lying face down on the floor.

Nice opening sentence.

"Donald Trump complained Friday about not winning the Nobel peace prize for 2026, a year in which he started a war with Iran."

Woo! New #Immich release with upgraded face-recognition sharing getting very good reviews and feedback.

If you've been looking to get your photos off "the cloud" and onto a private, open source service that you host yourself, then now is a really good time. Face sharing has been a bit of a roadblock for a lot of people (especially families), but not any more!

I don't even know the date of the upcoming Victorian state election and I'm already exhausted by it.

I'm back from the Newkind Social Change conference, and goodness me it is *rough* landing back into the midst of the surveillance capitalism grind.

On the upside I'm probably going to run some sort of workshop to help people getting their photos out of corporate hands and onto servers they control (eg: immich).

Look, I get it, LLMs can't replace *your* expertise, but as a white middle-aged man in tech who is often confidently wrong and taken seriously anyway, they've already mastered the only thing I've ever been good at.

I'm now running navidrome¹ to stream my music collection and it's pretty great.

I'm also very grateful that Picard² exists to fill in the metadata on CDs I ripped 20+ years ago.

No gratitude to all the AI bots scraping musicbrainz/listenbrainz constantly and ruining things, especially when they could just bulk-download the data legitimately³.

I don't think @jonny convincing a flagship LLM to leak its own code, torrent files, and mine cryptocurrency will ever get old.

It only just clicked as to why Mr 9 asked me extensively about my "favourite flavour", and I'm now just a little concerned I'm going to receive a Fried Dace with Salted Black Beans birthday cake.

OMG!!! NEW CAT JUST DROPPED¹!!!!

¹ Was formally described by international zoologists. Local communities had known about the cat for ages.
