A long time ago, I was on a Gamergate target list. Nothing happened, but it was scary and it made me think very concretely about two threats: people getting into my accounts, and people turning up in person.
The second one is why, for years, my travel newsletter only ever said where I'd been, never where I was going.
I didn't call any of that threat modelling at the time. I was thinking the way engineers think, working out who I was worried about and what they might do.
That's a threat model though, and it's where @halle and I start in Breaking Into the Security Mindset: the same thinking, pointed at your product instead of your life.
There's something a bit radical about two women building a course about security, which I love. Security has a specific idea of who belongs in it, and plenty of engineers rule themselves out.
Our take is that we do security all the time. We just usually call it "bug fixing" or "UX". Turns out, for all the FUD, it's not rocket science. It's a systematic way of looking at things, and engineers are trained for this.
Our first cohort starts TOMORROW, October 12. We'd really love it if you joined us.

Spot-on, as always.
Finally we have Apple picking weather after a hot week.
You should stay up and read more posts. You’re just getting to the good part
All corruption, all the time in Trump world -- nothing comes remotely close to this level of sleaze in American history. https://www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-is-the-picasso-of-corruption?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
Ignore polls, put on your adult pants and vote.
No one on his staff even once thought to check if there were any women's games being played that night.
These are the people calling themselves defenders of women's sports.
Raw collard wraps are my current obsession. Now devoting a good 90 minutes on Sundays to making a bunch for the week.
Today in the Castro was the Mrs. Roper Romp, in which a ton of people (I lost count) showed up dressed as Mrs. Roper from Three's Company.
I love my city!
Speaking as someone who just visited and was bedazzled by Grand Teton National Park, let me ask, WHAT THE F*@& IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!
The Trump administration is considering the construction of a baseball park in Grand Teton National Park after being approached by Major League Baseball about hosting a game on public lands.
Are you going to vote in six weeks? Are you asking everyone you know to vote? It's time to return sanity, ethics, and patriotism to the US.
My bandmate wrote this one a few months after the 2016 election. I love how hopeful it is, and especially that we cracked up at the end when recording it. https://elsealwayshappens.bandcamp.com/track/antidote
I wrote this in 2016, before the election. It's still relevant, and yet it also seems so naive now. https://elsealwayshappens.bandcamp.com/track/trump-card

"Look, me and the EU people got this little misunderstanding. See, they're EU ... I'm US. They got the Arc de Triomphe, mine is the Great Big Arch. We both got two all-white parties, special laws, lettuce, cheese, fascists and Nazis, but their Nazis have swastikas. My Nazis have no swastikas."
BE TOO WEIRD FOR A.I. TO REPLACE.
Someone pointed out that any time a Republican accuses Dems of sexual deviancy, you know what they’re going to get caught doing themselves, which makes me think people should keep Tuberville away from any college football mascots. And just to be safe, Gritty.
