Hey #mastodon If a quote boost is just a "post pending", I don't want it it to be in my timeline at all. Please and thank you.

Everything is just so stupid. The US military almost boarded a Chinese ship based on an AI-generated intelligence report.
> It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying.

And BTW I'm using noai.duckduckgo.com and have AI images set to "Hide".
Here are some examples of what dominates the results; there are many more. Challenge: do this search and see how long it takes to find a real map among the images.
BTW I wanted to mark just the images as Hidden/Sensitve but I couldn't find a way to do it without CW-ing the entire post. Looks like that ability has been removed--If not, can anyone tell me how to do it?

omg :oh_no: :oh_no_bubble: I did an image search on 'topographic map of North America' and the results are completely full of horrifying genAI shit that's absolutely nothing like the topography of NA, or even like actual maps for that matter. 😭 The internet we used to know is well and truly dead. What does this do to kids' minds?
It wasn't that long ago that I easily found real, professional maps with a search like that. Fortunately I dl'd a lot of them, because the chances of finding them again are low.

One thing I learned long ago is that when people ask for your opinion on something they made or did is that you should always start with praise and pointing out the good things about it.
What I still haven't learned is that you should stop there.

IT'S A TRAP!
What a wild night of storms. Didn't get much sleep. There are lots of power outages across the area. I have power but the other side of the street doesn't!
Lots of flooded areas too. A few road closures from flooding. Some people had to be rescued from their car using a boat in one flooded intersection. We got about 2.75" of rain from it in my area.
The storm had a measured 113 mph wind gust when it was a hundred or so miles west of here. Fortunately the worst of the wind passed by us to the south but what we got was still bad enough. There were also some doppler-indicated tornado warnings, not sure if any were actual tornadoes.
I've gotten my downed tree branches cleaned up (oh my back!) and a call in to the cable company to re-attach the cable at my house--its anchor came off the wall so it's dangling low down, only still attached by the actual coax connector. Service is still working though, fortunately!

Since Minnesota, ICE has decided to take a 'lower profile' strategy and the media is fully cooperating with them on it.
But ICE/DHS is still doing its atrocities just like before and the concentration camps are still abusing their captives just like before. We're just not hearing about it on the news any more, and the victims are being forgotten by the general population.

I think this video with Heather Cox Richardson and Paul Krugman is very interesting, about the #AI bubble: Is it really a bubble? If it is, what will happen when it bursts? How is it like or different from some other bubbles in history? What about China's approach to AI?

The only problem with Spring. We have severe weather risk for the next 5 days, each day a higher risk than the day before.
WTF, CDC? 🙄
YESTERDAY:> There are 17 U.S. citizens aboard the ship who will be returning to the United States. As of Saturday none of them had tested positive for the hantavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
> A CDC official said Saturday that the federal government **doesn't** plan to have the repatriated American cruise ship passengers quarantine upon arrival in the U.S. <
TODAY: > Hantavirus live updates: 1 American tests positive, another symptomatic, HHS says
> Teams will bring back Americans to the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska. <

Unpleasant experience this morning, service technician (from company I bought it from) came out to do a routine annual A/C check.
I won't go into details but the safety switch between breaker and furnace "just happened" to suddenly go bad and started popping and crackling while he was here--the one they replaced the previous switch with when the same thing happened last year (that one actually blew its fuse rather than spark).
I don't know what they're doing in these checks (he says absolutely nothing he did could cause that), but it seems like a hell of a coincidence this would just happen to occur right while they're messing with it 2 years in a row. But I'm expected to believe 1) it must have been like that already, even though it definitely wasn't, and he admitted it wasn't doing that when we first down there ("but maybe it's intermittent"--as if I wouldn't notice something like that or smell it), or 2) oh you know, those 'crappy parts from China' can go bad at any time.
So during all this a voice starts coming out of his phone and he says, oh that's my glasses talking to me. That's when I realized he was wearing *Meta smart glasses!* :blobdisapproval: I'd noticed they had unusually thick frames but thought nothing of it. He assured me he hadn't been recording. More dystopian shit to have to be on the lookout for now. :brdScream:

After the person who had been cutting my hair for 20 years retired, I went to another person at the same place, and my worst fears were realized. He did it pretty well the first time so I went to him again but this time it's absolutely horrible and way too short and there's nothing anyone can do until it grows back out. :bunhdsad:
My Kindle (the original paperwhite) still sort of works, sometimes. But it kept locking up and having to be rebooted frequently and acting like it's a matter of time before it won't reboot at all.
So I stopped using it a few months ago and picked up a cheap epub-only reader to use until I decide whether or which 'good' ebook reader to buy--I only know I won't buy another Kindle.
Ironically my old Kindle Keyboard model still works fine--of course it hasn't been supported for a long long time but I can still sideload mobi formatted books onto it if I want.
Now that Amazon has declared my Paperwhite obsolete and useless for new books anyway, I think I might try the 'jailbreak and install KOReader' thing I've been hearing about.
If the locking up issue is a hardware problem and it gets bricked I haven't lost anything, but if it's just a software problem, that could fix it and make it more useful than before, and I'd have no need to buy a new device.
