What annoys me is that we have several processes external to our VLE that should be integrated. We currently have to push docs around and generate things individually. Integration means supporting auto generation of stats and reports useful for other processes.
Random thoughts: digital sovereignty is good, but the change from Microsoft products is a complex and important process to get right.
Migration will take time, however, I think we can lessen that by migrating business processes in advance and reducing reliance on ‘documents’ and more on web wevices and forms.
Shouldn't we maybe try to get organised and at least tell our bosses that what happened to the ICC means that we must not rely on Microsoft products entirely?
Yay getting ideas for research that might be novel enough to grant it.
Boo, getting them on a Friday night.
Something I wish they’d explained better at school is that skills are transferable and often you’re learning how to learn. I see so many adults complain about how useless learning recorder in school music class was. The teachers weren’t into bad covers of hot cross buns, they were trying to teach musicality, sheet music reading, rhythm and handling an instrument that could be applied to other things in future using the cheapest, easiest to play, hardest to break instrument possible. I feel like the inability to see how learning things might be beneficial in indirect ways haunts a lot of people into adulthood to their detriment

"We have been developing and testing #Nextcloud for some time now. Within the University of #Groningen, we've had around ten years of experience with it, under the name Unishare. That's important groundwork to build on."

Oh wow. From MinBZK:
Law as Code

For work, I’ve offered student projects to do this with University policy…I think students think this stuff is boring, but look! RegelRecht….
yes, I have created a `myplace.sty` for customisation.
I was going to fork, but forking means maintaining things I do not understand.

For those afflicted with Moodle, try running:
```
$ texdoc moodle
‘Twas a lovely surprise.
There are a few caveats, but much more comprehensive for essay questions than GIFT. Although GIFT is useful for many of the other question types.
Every single time, 'Scheduling Poll', MS integration of 'FindTime' disappoints.
You are supposed to be greedy and choose the first slot. I wonder if it is because the poll has not officially closed...
So today's fun jolly was learning how to use pgfplots tables to typeset heat maps for CSV data. (supplements the scatter plot with regions to highlight interesting data)
pgfplots is a powerful tool, that for many simple analyses I required, does well and not require python scripting nor ggnuplot or mathplotlib.
A lot bloody easier than excel ;-)
Yesterday, I started a new job as lecturer in mathematically structured programming at Strathclyde. It's sad to leave Nottingham, of course, but I'm also very happy to be back in Glasgow!
The future of my Nottingham email is currently very uncertain, so please replace 'nottingham' with 'strath' if you want to reach me from now on:-)
folks working in theoretical PL or logic/math-adjacent CS: if someone in your department were teaching a "research methods" class and wanted you to suggest some readings related to the methods used in your field, what would you send them?
i've had lots of interesting conversations about this, but what's been written and published? (i'm also interested in your opinions even if they're not written down in papers, but secondarily.)
One of the annoyances in using `listings` for papers is that when your command chars are to recognise highlighting commands, anonymous functions cause an issue!
This will disappear when i convert the source to annotated versions, but is annoying nonetheless.
Swiss government decides not to use AWS for running its digital identity infrastructure.
AWS was preferred for its high availability, and because of poor progress of Switzerland's own "Government Cloud".
Reasons to dismiss AWS include need for digital sovereignty and interference from the US CLOUD Act. The danger of a kill switch and the complicated exit strategy lead to non-availability risks that eliminate any availability benefits provided by AWS itself.
