@ElyseMGrasso I was able to start reading Duke of the Elderkin! #bookstodon the conslusion I think of an interesting early modern European fantasy trilogy with good liturgy and a nice magical system and a great story.

An enjoyable set of Wikipedia pages.

This book is well worth the read. It doesn’t really make me hate Meta more but it puts color behind the sense of evil they give off.
My spouse volunteers weekly as a delivery driver for the Food Justice Coalition, taking free vegan meals to people in the Salt Lake Valley.
Part of their funding in the past has come from federal grants, but this is no longer tenable because the terms of their funding now requires them to check immigration status of anyone receiving food.
They are working to replace the federal funds with other sources, please help if you can
@timnitGebru I once at a conference finally told off someone that was an absolute asshole. Obviously, I only felt safe because I’m senior and have privilege. It triggered an entire UW HR investigation after the guy claimed that I “verbally assaulted” him 🙄. Still worth it though.
Eid Mubarak!
#gotosocial so I have stood up my local instance but it seems I won't see much hashtag activity or trending news/posts? But there is a relay feature which maybe I can help with that solves this?
#bookstodon "when you come from a background of crazy people, it's confusing to process your first sane people." #zarnagarg in the brilliant and excruciatingly honest (in the sense of emotions we all feel, hence also laugh out loud funny) memoir "This American Woman".
For those of you who have not experienced being marginalized in some way, this is my best analogy: I have a bullseye on my back that I can’t see that says: harass me, make unsolicited comments about my appearance, insult me to make yourself feel better. In the current political regime and during COVID, it’s become worse because the president is literally encouraging you to do it and he’s doing it too. And it’s a constantly shifting sign that I have to track where sometimes I’m a model minority and sometimes I caused the kung flu. Sometimes, I’m a shining example of how women can make it in tech and sometimes I’m a reminder that you aren’t as successful as a girl. It’s not logical and it makes no sense to me either. I wish I could see what the sign said every day when I go out but I can’t so I just have to be scared that anything might happen.
Another month in a beautiful world. Let's do better this month.
I use Linode for a long time but I am looking to move to EU hosting, to get away from US not for latency. Any recommendations? I have two VMs and a persistent storage thing; I backup home files and host my email and dns and tiny website mostly for my own recipes and resume and do the odd dev or network testing so not very demanding. #selfhosted #linode
#emacs I am thinking of migrating away from RMAIL finally and switch to an imap based thing so I can like get my tickets at the airport without having to ssh into my cloud emacs machine. Any recommendations other than Gnus which I don't like?
#Gotosocial thinking of setting up a self hosted server and a big go fan. Would I miss any features from mastodon.online by switching? I just chat, don't even DM.
So Trump is trying to bully and insult Harris, but he seems not to realize she has been a smart black woman in public life in the US for 60 years - she's been insulted and demeaned like 100 thousand times by much better people than Trump.

@owillis1977 good news everyone, the outstanding political writer Oliver Willis has joined Mastodon! Inciteful analysis of ways in which the Dems have squandered many political advantages and failed to think clearly. Also a funny writer!
I wrote a blog post about what it is like being #womenintech within the framework of #moralphilosophy and ethics. #consistencyforthewin https://irenezhang.net/blog/2024/07/24/misogyny.html
#golang #simulation I want to write a network servers simulation where the simulated work is passed around via channels to worker go routines that make note of the work done and update the service state (load, memory) and pass the dependent calls down other channels. Is there something like this already?
