Usagi Electric received the Tony Sale Award from the UK's National Museum of Computing located at Bletchley Park, the site of the Enigma code-crackers. Watch this for a great talk and some great after questions from the staff, all computer historians and computer pioneers in their own right: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmUtew0NaTQ
I was having another think about THE 800XL and its apparent lack of an SIO port. It seems otherwise to be a gorgeous machine with a functioning keyboard.
The website of the company currently trading under the Atari name does say you can
Load your own games and software from USB flash drives with cartridge, disk and cassette image support.
What's not clear is if the latter two emulated media types are writable. If they're not, this sadly is a consumption-only machine.
With no writable media, it's impossible for a new generation to rediscover the creative possibilities which made the original 8-bits so exhilarating. They were bursting with possibility.
If Atari have missed that key point, they're not worthy custodians of the name.
I'm seeing lots of people on my timeline talk about ZFS as a pleasant side benefit of switching to one of the BSDs so I think it's time for a public reminder that the ZFS devs think they don't need to give you a real fsck—one that actually checks the consistency of the on-disk data structure and repairs it if necessary. 'zfs scrub' is like RAID scrub, it only does block checksums.
This inexcusable act of hubris once forced me to restore an entire file server from offline backup.
I bought this stunning silk satin fabric for too much money in Paris this summer. I’ve been desperate to wear it but not had time - until now! It’s becoming a long sleeved cowl necked blouse.
Oh, I figured it out! Open a new tab in each window so you can see tabs, then drag the tab in one window onto the other window. Nice!
@fluidlogic also maybe we can finally get more folks interested in osdev again
crikey people. I know I _used_ to be a BSD and Mac sysadmin, back when I was saving up the money to turn into an academic, and learned how to use TeX in four Himalayan languages, and eventually became a real professor, and then not, and dumped Macs, and then became a gov't anthropologist, and I'm cleaning the Linux stains off everything now. So I kept the habit of running my own servers and all that, though with attitudes that are about 30 years out of date, and I would much rather learn a new script than scripting language these days. And I wrote and thought a lot about ethics, sentient beings, and technology along the way.
But seriously, I wake up and find that #NetBSD is now the only safe harbour? Whaaat? I really hope the idiots who are trying to poison FreeBSD go find their personal Epstein island or whatever they want really; it would be good to have a choice. Thank goodness for NetBSD at least but ungggh it's going to be a lot of work moving all the tools over.
I'm really delighted to see the real buzz around #NetBSD now that Linux has descended into slop and the kernel team have turned their backs on mentoring a new generation of contributors.
And to be explicit about this: a long-running filter that's selecting for a willingness to tolerate bullshit and endure abuse is exceedingly useful if you're a terrible manager or a sex pest, two classes of people who have notably flourished in free software for a very long time.
But when smart people have choices, and they choose not to tolerate mismanagement and abuse and stop choosing you, either you grow up or soon all you have are people who think abuse and mismanagement are normal.
Holy shit.
"Here's a new rule just for you: don't use compilers for any of your kernel submissions.
Because if you can't show that you really understand what the machine is actually doing by writing your code in assembler […]"
His brain is completely fried.
Amazing find for the #zxspectrum community. Design documents for the ULAs of several Sinclair products have been found and archived. As well as schematics for some Spectrum models and more technical documentation and communication:

EDIT: Would be nice if someone mirrored this on archive.org or somewhere other than Google Drive. :)
Our company stands strong on this. Here's why we want to work with people who love to collaborate using the wondrous power of their imagination and critical thought. We will always choose a person over AI.
I'm giving away all my Sparc hardware:
2x SparcStation 10s
1x Lunchbox form-factor 32-bit SparcStation, maybe an LX? Basically a single processor SS10 in a lunchbox form factor with a microSparc CPU
1x Ultra 1e that doesn't boot with a graphics card
1x Ultra 5 with no cards or any other accessories
And a bunch of other random related stuff including some HDDs for the Ultra1e, several sBus graphics cards, an sBus ESP wide SCSI card, some random SCSI cabling and adapters, and an mBus HyperSparc CPU.
This is free to anyone who can either:
- collect it from the inner west of Melbourne
- or lives anywhere within ~15km of a line between the Melbourne and Geelong CBDs that is accessible by car (if you're not sure, ask)
I'm not going to split this up, so if you don't want all of this, please give away or recycle the rest.
I'll update this post when it's gone.
(Please boost for reach, I'd really like to give all of this away instead of recycling it)

Welcome to #TransTuesday!
There is NO ethical consumption of Harry Potter
Not the books, movies, or tv show. Not licensed games or merch. Not fanfic. Not even pirated.
EVERY bit keeps the franchise alive and enables JKR's transphobia
If you truly care about trans people, you need to let it die

i wanna start a software consultancy for cleaning up vibecoded projects where all we do is ask clients when they started vibecoding and rollback to a commit before that point
Latest post on Improv talks about Pito Salas's work in the creation of the product, and his fame as "inventor of the pivot table."
Pito Salas, himself, dropped a comment on the post saying, "This article is an amazing tour the force analysis of Improv ... what I've read is accurate and the analysis is on point."
So spread the word, the Improv article is "Pito approved!" (not to put words in his mouth, ahem)
Too many people whom I consider friends, when I tell them "This is what fascism looks like":
"No, no, Amin, it's not helpful to call that fascism."
