you know what your problem is? you keep getting put into hypothetical situations by reading second person pronouns. like, take right now for example. all I had to do to bring you into this mess was drop a "you" here and there. grow a backbone! I myself have a thoughtform named "ewe" who is my stand-in whenever a piece of text tries to insert the reader. it's been in quite the pickle a number of times. always makes me laugh. *smacks you on the back encouragingly* now get out there and put up another barrier between the world and your true self. make me proud, my precious snail shell!

huh, looks like a few (old) packages on crates.io accidentally included their target/ folders in their published code:

the scarcest resource is give-a-shit. even something perfect will collapse if there's not enough give-a-shit to go around. the only reason anything works is because there's people in the background invisibly doing thankless labour to keep everything working. it's so hard to explain this point. I've heard people say it before I became a community organizer and was like "I guess that makes sense" but now that I've got all this experience it REALLY makes sense. I'm not sure how I'd explain this experience-backed understanding to myself from three years ago. probably impossible.

if you use Forgejo and would like more CI resources than Codeberg provides (or just don't want to run your own CI): I would like to onboard a few more people/projects to https://felinebuildservices.org/

My query system is coming together really nicely, but I forgot to post about it! Two massive updates:

• I wrote some proc macros! Proc macros are never fun, but thankfully, these came together in a few hours. The query system's API now looks a lot more like Salsa.

• Things are async now! You can do I/O in your queries, execute multiple tasks concurrently, and more :3

You'll get more context when I'm on stage in FIVE DAYS :3

Error: password must contain:

Three lower case letters for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven upper case letters for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine digits for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One special character for the Dark Lord on his dark throne;
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

One username to rule them all, one password to find them,
A second factor to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them;
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie

In exactly ONE WEEK, I'll be giving a talk at EuroRust about Krabby's query system!! I'm so excited!!!!

Sexism aside, I think prizes like this do a lot of damage to the image of science as a whole. In Newton’s day, you could lock yourself in a lab and discover or invent something novel alone. But even Newton admitted he was standing on the shoulders of giants.

For at least the last hundred years, science has been a team sport. Focusing on the success rather than the process is a celebration of luck more than anything else. A hundred teams explore quite plausible hypotheses. One team hits something that isn’t falsified. You give a prize to the person who was first author on the paper. That reinforces the idea of a hero scientist and detracts from all of the work necessary to get to that point.

It means that people who care about the collaboration are discouraged from entering the field (which is one of the many causes of the continued gender imbalance).

It means that funding agencies don’t internalise the idea that you need to fund a lot of work that will fail and keep trying to pick the one savant who will always succeed.

It means that the work of most people in the field is undervalued.

It promotes toxic politics in labs with clout harvesting an obsessive behaviour for the people aiming at these things.

It promotes secrecy in research so you don’t get ‘scooped’, rather than sharing early data so other people can rapidly build on it.
