Linus before and after AI, which he reassures us is absolutely not stressful or something to worry about.

Good times with @patriksvensson some days ago 🍺

I still don't understand why the only product without a Copilot is Flight Simulator.

repo for an ostensibly finished project in perpetual maintenance mode that suddenly gets like 100 commits in a couple months is basically a universal sign to run far away

When I read UNIX-HATERS a few years ago, it unexpectedly helped me fill a gap in regular expression history.

In its chapter on Usenet, they complain about Larry Wall's rn newsreader. It introduced killfiles, which filter emails using regular expressions.

Well, I had incidentally just been researching historical regular expression engines and trying to trace back the development of regular expressions in Perl 1.0. Since Larry Wall created both, it seemed likely that rn influenced Perl. It turned out that Perl adapted the engine from rn and ultimately from James Gosling's Emacs. Since Perl removed attribution comments, I don't think this had been established before.

When I revisit that project, I'll need to update it for what I learned from chatting with James Gosling at SIGGRAPH.

OpenAI and Microsoft admitted LLMs are predatory tech built on “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” and the “largest theft of labor in human history.” An internal Microsoft document said AI has created a “doom loop” that is killing “the entire web.” https://www.404media.co/doom-loop-openai-and-microsoft-admits-llms-are-destroying-the-web-and-built-on-theft/

Here's an interesting read on the Reference Image feature in Apple's new iPhones:

https://security.apple.com/blog/apple-reference-image/

tl;dr the image sensor in the phone effectively boots into a secure mode, creates a "secure digital negative", cryptographically signs it (using Secure Enclave) and preserves the metadata throughout any subsequent image manipulation.

At the same time, it preserves privacy/anonymity by not allowing the image to be linked to individual phones.

Well bother, my laptop seems to have died overnight. Don't suppose anyone has a working Thinkpad Z13 gen 1 motherboard they'd like to sell?

I've been using #pprof for years now, and I still can't believe the terminology used all over this tool and its docs isn't just some elaborate joke.

So I think we in tech are going to have to really face up to two things that the whole #Omarchy thing has exposed.

Funding for #openSource was never really a problem - turns out there was plenty money available for all these years. The money raised so far by #DHH shows that.

The second is that the illusion that the tech industry ever sat on the right side of history when clearly it's just allowed Nazis to hide in plain sight this entire time.

I don’t know exactly what a sleeper agent is but it sounds like something I’m more than qualified for.

“How do we find new ways to excuse that thing AI did which would have been a fireable offense if made by an employee?” is the topic of like 50% of all meetings in 2026.

I'm looking for well-reasoned, well-written exemplars of good RFC and ADR writing. Do you have any favourites? Any examples of excellent, or even beautiful, technical writing?

I'm running a session at work to help us improve our writing culture in the face of the seductions of LLMs, and am compiling examples.

Hey #kubernetes anyone that cares about zone aware downscaling for hpa?

We think about trying to #opensource a controller that would fix the gap. Anyone interested in this would be great to let me know!

Here’s the blog post I promised y’all on how I recommend switching password managers in 2026! It covers:
- why your iPhone or iPad, and not your Mac, might be the place to start your switch
- when to make the switch and how to treat your “old” app going forward
- tips and tricks for switching to Apple Passwords, if that’s where you’re going (can be skipped!)
- the recent controversy in password management and some thoughts on values
