So I think we in tech are going to have to really face up to two things that the whole #Omarchy thing has exposed.

Funding for #openSource was never really a problem - turns out there was plenty money available for all these years. The money raised so far by #DHH shows that.

The second is that the illusion that the tech industry ever sat on the right side of history when clearly it's just allowed Nazis to hide in plain sight this entire time.

(That isn't to say tech industry was ever some virtuous utopia to begin with - but at least many try to use whatever positions we have to improve things for everyone and not just a chosen few)

@tanepiper People kidded themselves these tech CEOs were libertarians and quirky as some had beards and wore colourful shirts, or went on Rogan and puffed weed. Once the rule of law stopped being applied even in the meagre way it was in the aughts, we got to see masks get tossed aside, quirky became fashy and the worst, thoughtless aspects of libertarianism became all too clear, you know, the greed, being fine with slavery and knowing all the age of consent laws.

@tanepiper I'm not certain DHH raising money shows that there is money for open source, so much as it shows there is money in shows of loyalty, if the people loyal to you are very wealthy. I think the project could be anything. (meme coin, movie, startup, toy product) It would get the same funding, as long as he had the same connections to the same people.

Truth be told, I think the amount of money he is getting is small, in the context of who is giving and why.

@theeclecticdyslexic I think that's an entirely fair point - NFTs are a really good example of this as well, a few Kickstarters over the years, even someone like Tony Robins - I guess the point is it's loyalty + no critical thinking for the vast majority (there's also a lot of people donating at the $16 layer).

But someone like the CTO of AWS could have easily paid back in kind to many of the projects that made them profit from others works - instead he chose this, likely knowing the signal.

@tanepiper omarchy isn't getting OSS money, it's getting war money.

You know that money that never runs out even as people are starving in the streets
