I'll be in Denver on Saturday, co-facilitating a session on workplace organizing and beating apathy.

One of the projects I have been working on with the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union (#rmfu), led by @GeorgeCheney
This webinar should be useful to people hoping to understand ways to resist the loss of farm land to development and create opportunities for new farmers, land back, etc.

@marsiposa It was @jonobie ! A post worth bookmarking.

@jonobie I made the fermented peppers, the same buena mulatas in the picture. (Purple turns to beige, alas.) Very hot! I will keep one jar for a relish and try to liquefy the other one... Thanks for the idea and recipe!
@marsiposa ;-)

@jonobie Buena Mulata peppers. Should be pretty hot.

Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins and other front range folks. I'll be at this event to see Jessica Gordon-Nembhard on Thursday. @clayton @ntnsndr @care_save @jenileighharris

Folks in the New York City region. My old org, the Association for Union Democracy is holding a fundraising social. Great place to meet grassroots union activists and learn about current struggles.

Sharing this from #TheSELC 's Non-Profit Democracy Network https://www.theselc.org/npdn_calendar:

Have you been dreaming of building an organization with shared leadership? Do you want your organizational structure to more deeply embody your values and visions for a new world?

Join the Nonprofit Democracy Network, a project of the Sustainable Economies Law Center, for a three-part series of 30 minute participatory trainings for organizations considering the transition to shared leadership.

Topics will include assessing your organizational capacity for shared leadership (September 30), identifying and shifting power in your organization (October 21), and navigating the culture shifts needed for deep workplace democracy (Nov 18). Join with your team, or on your own! Each session will provide optional "homework" and take-home tools and resources to be used between each session to deepen your exploration of shared leadership structures.

Join one, two, or all three!

If you are in NYC on October 7th, a documentary I co-directed decades ago - Domsey An Grèv - is being shown as part of the Nou Akoma Nou Sinèji festival.

Looks like one of our first co-op projects is going to be a de-google cafe. I know I have seen great stuff here on that topic -- can anyone who has done one suggest materials, plans, approaches, resources that were helpful?

My farmer-poet friend Will reminded me of the old farmer's saying, "Fast is smooth, but smooth is slow."

I love it, an improvement on the Japanese saying I often cite: 急がば廻れ, which I translate as "If you're in a hurry, take the long way."

As @emi has pointed out, speed is also related to trust: if you go too slow people may lose trust in the process, or lose the sense of intensity or urgency that going slow requires...

I want to share easy, attractive worker co-op educational materials with my co-workers to help people prepare to write bylaws. I just looked at Start.coop and LA Co-op Lab. Both are good, the former uses a "canvas" model to guide people through the relevant questions. The latter offers beautifully designed guides that you can see online. But I am hesitant to use either because I think they make assumptions (e.g. a board/member structure) where they should just ask questions. That's why I was so excited by How to Create a Solidarity Enterprise by @luisrazeto. Having used that text, I can say that the approach works and creates real cooperators. The challenge is to make it pithy and pretty, without sacrificing depth...

Maybe my favorite part of cooking beans is going through and removing bits of clay that inevitably find their way in. This is a mix of Anasazi and Pinto beans. (Can you find the clay bit?)

Crabapple tree on our walk. Matsumoto Hajime, of Shiroto no Ran, once said we need a "hanami economy," like the temporary economy that pops up all over Japan during cherry blossom season: people eating together on blankets under the trees, consuming, but in a commensal mode, celebrating fleeting beauty.

We are finishing up the two final projects (bylaws and business plan) of the co-op course we have followed for nearly three years, based on the manual by @luisrazeto. The mood is shifting as we come into our own as a cooperative, and everyone is happy and eager.
