I repeat the catechism to myself: *You don’t have to post.*

People whose first language was not English used to come into EFNet's #perl channel and ask something like “how do u remove first char from a string in perl?” and a certain one of the regulars there, indisputably a human expert on Perl, would regularly reply:

“No u”.

The visitor was expected to understand from this that this human expert would answer only if they spelled “you” as y-o-u.

Let me know when Claude starts doing that, I'll reconsider my position on this.

I was really into this “New Skill November” idea — I started teaching myself Rust on October 16 — until I read the right-hand side and realized these people would not be at all happy about my project.

I ask Claude lots of questions about Rust. When I say “This trait thing looks a lot like typeclasses” it has a coherent reply. It doesn't say “well, I don't know Haskell, so I can't really say.”

Probably its answers are not always correct. If someone thinks that is a serious problem, they should sit down and take a deep breath before I reveal some news about human experts that they will find horrifying.

And when this graphic says “ask your fellow human beings for help”, it brings up memories of being used as a beach ball by insecure geeks on IRC.

Nevertheless, I am “doing the hard part myself”, and when I'm done it will be me who can program in Rust, because I am a serious and diligent scholar, regardless of what tools I use along the way.

Spent about 10m on this after dinner. Not much but progress is progress #woodworking #lutherie

Only got just started on shaping the headstock #woodworking #lutherie

Headplate. Easy, it’s cherry. Will probably have to purchase the veneer for the fret board, or make it myself out of hard maple (only stuff I have on hand hard enough to be a good fretboard) #woodworking #lutherie

COMMIT TO SOMETHING #woodworking

I am going slow at this which historically has meant I am deep down nervous about it. Once I learn the real error bars I tend to move much faster (like about 5x faster literally) anyway hoping to glue this part together tomorrow morning #woodworking

I ended up bouncing off of reading Don Quixote in the original Spanish because the latency of looking up words was too painful. A very strange side effect of reading in Spanish was that I dreamed dreams every night. I miss that, even though the dreams were all just weird. So my plan is to continue reading in English but try to read the first couple of sentences a night (or maybe per chapter?) in Spanish.

In progress neck. I hope the figure remains, the chatoyance is very pretty. #woodworking

As close to perfect as I could get. Had to shape the curve to try to get the contact to be as close to opposite the hole as possible. I’m sure there’s a way to construct that but I don’t know it. #woodworking

That was right but also I think I gotta quit while I’m ahead 😂 🩸 #woodworking
