“Made With Baristas” suggests something very different than “Made By Baristas”, marketing drone.

The concept of a legal name as primary suggests the government has more say as to your identity than you do. I reject this concept.

I am reminded of a junior dev asking various people online for advice. We universally told him that his idea wouldn’t work. And it didn’t, and the response when he came back with “it’s not working how do I make it work” was “we told you it wouldn’t work and we’re not going to keep helping you when you didn’t listen the first time.”

I am going to set myself a deadline of end of month to move to Fastmail or I will continue to ADHD doing it.

If anyone has a good guide/advice/pitfalls to avoid for moving from GMail (under a domain) would be useful. I’d like to keep the YouTube Premium* but if I have to resubscribe to a few things with a new account that’s not a deal breaker.

The only non-Google thing I can recall using Google to auth to is an RSS reader service I don’t use anymore and if I’ve forgotten anything else I clearly don’t need it.

*ok I don’t want to but there are a couple of things I want to keep watching and video ads make me untenably angry.

I am going to use the model railroad inventory system I've been working on to help put together how much insurance I need.

By spinning up a dev instance with the tool that pre-loads data and then querying the resulting database. The adding prices to everything in a spreadsheet. Should I have just made a spreadsheet to start with? NO AND ALSO SHUT UP.

I'm unclear on whether I want pricing in this system but I am not getting sidetracked on that. Today.

This obsession with summarisation from LLM proponents displays a deep lack of understanding of the value of detail, and indeed a contempt for it. Not everything can be boiled down to a pithy summary shorn of context you superficial bastards.

So I previously set up a Firefox profile so when I'm streaming I don't have my private stuff come up in a browser. And now Firefox has a Profiles menu and they appear to be a completely different set of profiles and the fuck are they doing?

Just had someone ask me where I got my @daedalus CyberRating t-shirt.

I do need a few more shirts once I get paid…

I feel if you have ever edited autoexec.bat that should qualify as age verification. You* be old.

I want operating systems to have a “I’m neurospicy” checkbox on setup that turns off all the annoying bullshit. No sound effects. No animations. No cutesy bullshit that pretends the computer is in any way a person or has sentience and emotions. All notifications opt in unless the thing is literally on fire. No stealing my fucking focus.

Some people will tell you that “enwierdenfy” is not a word but yes it is. I made it up. Why do only dead people and the dead inside* get to make up words? CARPE THE DIEM OR ANY OTHER SET OF SYLLABLES THAT TAKE YOUR FANCY.

I've been having ear pain coming and going and I really should see my doctor about this.

WHY IS THIS DOCUMENT A PDF? WHY IS PDF? WE DON'T NEED TO PRINT THIS WHY IS THAT A KEY ELEMENT OF HOW THIS THING IS DISTRIBUTED?

Implementing Zero Factor Authentication with my new company Don’t You Know Who I Am Pty Ltd.

I'm aware of my tendency to think through all the possible ways things can go wrong. Part of this is disasterising due to anxiety. Part of it is learned professional experience where the way you build a robust system is working out all the possible failure cases and ensuring they're addressed in an appropriate fashion. Which is useful for ensuring your system handles production gracefully*. It isn't always the right approach in social contexts.

*a lot of the time in what I build this is "do all the things a human needs to fix this and don't make things worse". I'm not building life critical systems, nor do I want to that sounds really stressful.

Open plan offices are a conspiracy by Big Noise Cancellation to sell more cancelled noise.

What's your "my mental health isn't great right now" support trash fire? The thing you know is kind of awful but it's helped you get through?

And now I have the question of how deeply I want to represent purchase history. Requirements:

- When was something purchased
- When was it sold
- Amounts for individual items and total purchases
- Tracking of receipts.
- Which items were in a purchase.
- Non-tracked items in a purchase
- Parties involved.

For something like a pre-order or purchase online the time of purchase is not the time of receipt. Also purchases may involve returns or replacements. And payment may be due in parts, or involve partial or full refunds.

And I don't want to model an accounting system. I'm going to have to sketch some stuff out and iterate on it.

Doing inferior things faster is a short term approach that is not sustainable. It's kind of frustrating to have learnt so many of these things the hard way and then watch large segments of the industry suggest these mistakes are good, actually.

The personal project I've been using to learn a new language has been a series of reworkings when the friction of the approach got annoying, or I found limitations in it. The solution to the repetitive or hard to work with elements is not to hand off dealing them to a tool. Each of the serious friction points has led to insight that's both helped me learn the language and to improve the design. Each has led me to consider the relevant trade-offs. Which limitation is most pressing? What are the consequences of each? What language features I don't really know might it be worth learning to apply here?

The boring and repetitive code in this project has been addressed by repeatedly identifying it and changing the approach to remove it. I still have a lot of scope for this, but the net result of what I've done so far has been a cleaner, easier to work with system that is more focused on the core problems.

I've done the rote "apply this pattern" approach. I've worked on a lot of codebases where no one reacts to the feedback from the friction of doing things. It produces inferior solutions that require more work to maintain and fail more in production. If that's not a factor for you then I don't think our views of what we are trying to accomplish with software align.
