    If you're making a video and you want people to watch it, please please don't use an AI-generated thumbnail 😞

    AI images scream "This is worthless slop" louder than anything else. People who might have enjoyed your video may skip it completely because they think the content will be slop too.

    If you're making a real video, use a real thumbnail from the video itself. Staying genuine tells people what the video is really like, and connects you to your audience.

    Same goes for writing. If you need thumbnails, there are a *ton* of copyright-free or fair use images you can use.

    I will tell them not to recommend a channel if one of their thumbnails looks AI generated. (I think I've heard YouTube does this to creators without their consent, but i only have so many ways i can signal them about my displeasures so that's what i do)

    @FediThing But what if I use a synthetic avatar to maintain my anonymity, replacing my real voice with a synthetic one for the very same reason? Showing your real face and using your real voice might not always be a good idea, especially when you're talking about anything political from a radical leftist perspective.

    @LordCaramac Maybe just do a voiceover with a synthetic voice generator? These have been around for decades, AI isn't required for that.

    There are also live CGI avatars and filters you can use which have been around for decades, these don't require AI either.

    @FediThing Speech synthesis based on machine learning sounds much more natural; with a bit of postprocessing, it can't be distinguished from a real human voice anymore, even if no human with that exact voice exists. Also, such AI speech synthesizers are often small enough to run on the local GPU without any need for an external computing centre.
    There's nothing wrong with using machine learning per se. The problem are big companies trying to make their models bigger and bigger so that they can never be run on consumer hardware.
