Aug 21, 2026, 12:30 AMIn high school computer class around 1990, we put a fake logon screen on every system where it would send your user name and password to the one networked printer, print a fake error message to the screen and loop until you rebooted at which point you'd get the real logon screen.

@jrdepriest @hacks4pancakes @malwaretech In the 90s at my high school this happened also (probably a lot of high schools!) - in our case it was a pretty convincing Novell NetWare login, but written in Basic 😅. Instead of an error message it would actually crash and lock the machine, forcing the user to restart the PC 😁.
Our teacher pointed out that he could tell when it was running because after the username it would say 'Enter you password:' instead of 'Enter your password:' - pretty embarrassing for erm, whoever wrote that!
