I’m not saying it’s impossible that this “voting machine switches to Repub” story isn’t an intentional thing, but the one video I’ve seen shows that the screen is simply not aligned with the “button”. It isn’t switching anything, the area the touch sensor thinks is where you clicked is just not actually aligned with the text you tried to click. Happens all the time on crappy apps on tablets and so forth. Hell, my SE that I’m on right now does that sometimes.

@mcnado Electronic voting machines are unnecessary and introduce all sorts of problems like these. Several states like Washington vote on paper ballots and it works fine! https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/117482003498085749

@mcnado In critical systems, bad engineering and design is just as bad as malice.

@log yes, but also no. Intent matters here. Shit engineering is one problem. Cheating is another.

@mcnado Shit engineering enables so many more avenues for cheating. Combine with Murphy's Law and if you don't consider cheating from the beginning, you guarantee it will eventually happen.

@mcnado That would be the genius hack in terms of devices. I wonder if it randomizes placement of candidates

@PlasticJohnny seemingly not. Question is, did they know about this problem, and order the candidates on the ballot accordingly
