Traditional journals gatekeep by charging thousands of $. So the issue is much more severe for a diamond open access journal like the @OJ_Astro which has no costs associated with submitting a paper for review for the author. But the time cost is real on the editor/reviewer side. For career astronomers there is also another implicit cost when submitting papers: if I suddenly start submitting tons of AI generated paper, my career/reputation will be affected. Not so for an independent researcher.

In an ideal world, we should only judge papers on their scientific content. But we live in an imperfect world with humans in it.

@hannorein This is likely beyond the scope of this discussion but in this current world we live in where people's trust in science and information is being twisted and torn and damaged at every turn, I don't think a lot of people are quite cognisant of (or perhaps, ready to grapple with) how much damage "vibe science" will do to the credibility of science everywhere.

Furthermore, how many resources will be wasted now and in the future to route out the nonsense from fact.
