Here in Barcelona for #MozFest, I had a wonderful ride today out to the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey.

Riding the 10th century Montserrat Pilgrimage Path on the way back, I reflected on the countless millions of people who have taken this journey over the last millennium. Today, I too joined this long journey of human endeavor and reflection.

Inside the basilica, I sat for a moment in a chapel whose artwork invited prayer for those who flee their homes due to violence and persecution. Displacement has a long history, as does the deep tradition of advocacy and hospitality for people who face such things.

Either, celebrating an enormous and thankless effort to fix things, done by people who on average are probably paid close to zero for this.

Or, one of the world's worst peanut galleries saying "Well, *I* would just have…" – consisting in large part of people who no one wants to let within 10 feet of their server architecture and who never tried working with others.

Traditional journals gatekeep by charging thousands of $. So the issue is much more severe for a diamond open access journal like the @OJ_Astro which has no costs associated with submitting a paper for review for the author. But the time cost is real on the editor/reviewer side. For career astronomers there is also another implicit cost when submitting papers: if I suddenly start submitting tons of AI generated paper, my career/reputation will be affected. Not so for an independent researcher.
