    @scroeser @bagder

    absolutely, the whole story including her death sounded upsetting but considering the length of the sentence i am assuming it was genuinely an unavoidable accident & the focus of the article was on how little support these programmers were getting so that's what i commented on

    @peachfront I suppose seeing the way people tend to cover traffic violence as something that just somehow 'happens', and the tendency to excuse men's violence against women is those men are considered admirable in some way, I'm less likely to take that assumption at face value.

    The way the sentence is framed certainly encourages us to think of the woman's death as a sad but unavoidable side note to the Russian guy's story.

    But then, the impacts of men's violence against women are often framed like this: as primarily a problem for the men. Or for their projects.

    sigh, in what world is it controversial to comment that a traffic accident resulting in a death is sad?

    no, i don't think traffic violence is treated as something that somehow just happens, that just isn't the world we live in, the human tendency is to make sure somebody always gets blamed

    i know nothing about the case except the length of the sentence, but IF it was negligent homicide (driver was drunk) doubt he'd be out in 10 months whereas if the pedestrian was drunk & stumbled out in traffic a judge might well believe that was a reasonable sentence for an unpopular driver (a foreigner) "not being in control of his vehicle" even if he could not have reasonably stopped his vehicle in time to prevent the accident

    but the reality is we don't know what happened, we just know the whole mess was sad and this particular story was about the fragility of the internet -- not about the dangers of driving (or walking across) dark streets in the dead of night
