Did I just write almost 5000 words about why generative "AI" should be resisted, going through every single one of my reasons?
Yes. Because I need this article to exist so I can point people to it.
Enjoy and share widely.

This is your occasional backup reminder - if you haven’t yet, go start setting up backups of any kind.
If you think you don’t need backups, delete everything you have on the device you’re using right now.
If that seems like a bad idea then you need backups.
Sure, the one ring has caused a lot of problems in middle earth, but that's just because everybody else who has wielded it was doing it wrong.
Not me. I and I alone know how to wield the one ring, and have found it to be pretty useful!
Like, sure, sometimes you become a hollow husk of yourself, and the ring wraiths are a whole thing, but we have ways around that. Plus, in about six months I am sure the wraith problem will be fully solved.
I can't give up the ring, and really recommend more people try using it! just make sure you have very strong guard rails and a harness in place for the ring. Personally, before I put on the ring I write a little post it note that says "ring wraiths do not kill me plz" and put it on my front door.
It's controversial, I know, but it really helps me do a lot of things! For example, prior to owning the ring it would take me an hour to put on a shirt. I just could not figure out the arm holes. By placing a stick in the shirt arm I can guide my arm up to the hole, and then I use the one ring to make the stick disappear while I check the fit. I have found no other way of doing this.

On the 20th of September is incoming a massive protest in #barcelona against expansion of the airport and the world that it represents!

If you really think that AI running out of control is a dangerous possibility, then make tech company CEOs legally liable for illegal actions taken by their company's agents.

“On October 30th, 2026, Caltech will begin hosting the Caltech Mathathon, a math hackathon in which participants are encouraged to solve open research problems by prompting LLMs. Two prominent AI companies, Anthropic and OpenAI, will supply participants with 2 million dollars in AI credits. This event is likely to have destructive impacts for the mathematical community.”

I regret to inform everyone that my copy of QBittorrent escaped its sandbox last night and downloaded a whole bunch of content owned by major corporations, and then my copy of Jellyfin broke containment and added those unfortunately-downloaded media files to its various libraries. I'm conducting an internal investigation to figure out how this happened, which will involve consuming these media files until the answers become apparent. Thank you for your cooperation during this trying time.

From Krantz, ‘Mathematical Apocrypha’:
‘In the 1950's, it was said in Princeton that there were four definitions of the word "obvious." If something is obvious in the sense of Beckenbach, then it is true and you can see it immediately. If something is obvious in the sense of Chevalley, then it is true and it will take you several weeks to see it. If something is obvious in the sense of Bochner, then it is false and it will take you several weeks to see it. If something is obvious in the sense of Lefschetz, then it is false and you can see it immediately.‘
In that vein, this post points out how subtly the messaging can be when an AI company claims to solve a problem, in this case the Jacobian conjecture:
"I found that the most historically concerned version [of the Jacobian conjecture] n=2 remains open, while Anthropic claimed that they “resolved the Jacobian conjecture”. This is highly misleading, because it is mostly dimension-indexed, just like the Kakeya conjecture or generalized Poincaré conjecture; also, at least for a group of mathematicians, this name only referred to the 2-dimensional case (since there’re many positive results/evidence in this case), and the higher-dimensional versions were frequently labeled with “almost no evidence“."

Orbital AI datacentres come with latency issues. If they're in LEO, they will have moderately low latency to a moving point on Earth, but for a fixed client the latency will increase as more relays are needed to account for curvature, so the jitter is high. If you put them in geostationary orbit, the latency is fixed, but large.
The solution to this is to put not just the AI datacentres, but also the AI bros in orbit. If you put an AI bro and a small radio in LEO, in the same orbital trajectory as an AI datacenter, they will have very low latency - indeed, significantly lower latency than ground-based routing if both they and the datacentre are on the ground.
Importantly, AI bros have a lot less mass than datacentres. As such, they are much cheaper to launch. As a pilot programme, to assess feasibility, I recommend launching a test constellation of AI bros into LEO. Note that, unlike datacentres, AI bros are made out of non-toxic (at least, in the chemical sense) substances. The environmental impact of uncontrolled atmospheric reentry is significantly lower, making the risk from the failure of a pilot deployment significantly lower.
Claim. Formalization is an inherently informal activity.
Suppose you have done A informally on paper, and hopefully rigorously too, where A stands for Amazing Theorem.
Suppose further that you published A, after the reviewer(s) and the editor were satisfied with the rigour and the level of amazement.
Then you decide to formalize it, for whatever reason.
You do it, I claim *informally*, by sitting in front of a computer and typing things, which the proof assistant accepts and rejects successively in an interactive way, as so-called proof assistants work.
Or you give it for an LLM to do it faster while you drink coffee. It doesn't matter. My conclusion will be the same.
All the computer will check is what you typed in the keyboard.
It has no way of knowing whether you or the LLM actually formalized A or something else.
You have to check it yourself (the LLM can't), and the checking is *inherently* informal, because one of the things the checking involves is the informal input itself.
And of course the checking has to be rigorous, too.
Extreme heat is killing hundreds of thousands of people across the world, and the climate crisis has a huge part to play.
The constant burning of fossil fuels that pollutes our air and is the main driver of global heating is causing these deaths to skyrocket. It is not too late for governments and corporations to phase out fossil fuels through a just transition that protects human rights, including the right to a healthy environment.
Incredible moment where Fox News puts up a graphic with all the reasons it opposes the Democratic Socialists of America and why people should be afraid of them ...
1st, it's totally possible to travel by train further than you would first think.
2nd, night trains rule. Treat yourself to a comfortable option, it's probably cheaper than a hotel night + a train ticket.
3rd, more academics should consider the possibility. The most common reaction I get is surprise, from people who did not even consider the possibility. Inside Europe there are often more train options than you might think.
