We are happy to announce that the Call for Participation for LGM 2027 (May 5–8 in Linz, Austria) is now open!

https://cfp.servus.at/libre-graphics-meeting-2027/cfp

As every year we are looking for:
Talks, presentations, workshops, BoF sessions and slides for the state of the libre graphics session.

In addition to this we also want to highlight three new items in this year's programme:

- We are planning an evening with performances (A/V, live coding, etc.) for which we invite you to submit your proposals

- We are also looking for short film entries (up to 20mins length), as we will be doing a film screening – tell all your free software filmmaker friends!

- Last but not least there will be a big, comfy space at our venue right next to the talks where you can present other artworks like prints, books, installations, etc. – provided that setup is easily and pragmatically possible (see the details in the call)

Thank you so much to all the people who have already helped out to write and set up the CfP, the website and preliminary graphics, and who are volunteering to add very cool additions like the performance night and film screening to the upcoming LGM 2027.

See you in Linz!

Are the firefox designers popping a lot of pills lately?!

This looks terrible. These enormous rounded corners are so disruptive, wastes so much space by making it necessary to constantly bump things out of the grid. I can see literally no utility in this whatsoever.

And why are there random clock icons all over everything?! This is not good information design. You seem to be just copying random features from infantile, annoying smart-phone apps and pasting them into a _desktop application_ which has a long (boring sure, but basically usable) tradition of interface culture.

Perhaps I'm showing my age, but it just feels like a desperate grasp at some kind of faux-naive, awkward chic that will be out of style in 6 weeks.

But I guess "form follows function" has now become "form follows cheap novelty marketing". Pfft.

Writing HTML by hand is hard and the only alternative is to use some monstrous corporate machinery.

Wait, no, actually that's not true. There are quite a few fun, funky, eccentric and convivial tools that can make cool web sites without leaving you stewing in tag soup.

We invite you to join a hand-on test-session / live mashup with tools like Decker, HotGlue, Scrubjay, TiddlyWiki and Contenteditable - all programs designed to work inside the browser instead of writing HTML by hand or using generators. It's gonna be slightly messy, cozy and a lot of fun.

@computersandblues will aid you in hosting your experiments and @studioagenturbuero with compressing your media.

Should we arrive at a little screenshot expo: even better!

We're curious in what you'll bring to the table – gladly tell us upfront if you plan on contributing – or just come around!

And the docker images have been updated. Be sure to pull a new image and verify you're running 8.4.27 in the admin screen!

Kindness is its own reward.

And unfortunately, I don't think there's a middle ground. I've heard people advocating for a “well you can use an LLM but just pinky swear you know what you're doing and how the code works” position, but to me they sound like the same people advocating for the nonexistent political “center” in US politics right now. It seems moderate and reasoned, but it's just a more comfortable abdication of responsibility.

It's more complicated than pithy social posts, so I don't like this venue for arguing any of it. I've tried writing something more thoughtful but it's 16k words so far and it's a f*king mess. Nobody wants to read that.

As it is now about five years since I wrote my "Frugal Computing" article, and meanwhile a lot of people have had occasion to misuse the term or at least misinterpret my intent, I felt it was time to revisit the concept.

tl;dr: It's about sufficiency, and not squandering resources. And the aim is to keep a liveable planet supporting an inclusive global society.

Did you know that many (most?) hearing aids have replacable batteries? This knowledge really makes me wonder about the consumer grade earphones and the forces that make them non-repairable.

(Yes I'm aware that hearing aids are far more expensive)

You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while.

Why?

Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year.
Deal?

Why ‘NAZA’ terrifies Israel’s liberal elite

"For decades, the liberal camp in #Israel has cultivated a convenient and effective defense mechanism. When faced with uncomfortable moral questions about Israel’s actions, responsibility could usually be assigned to the political fringes. The culprits were always the “bad apples”: hilltop youth, far-right ministers, a rogue infantry unit, settlers nobody in north Tel Aviv would invite to dinner.

This division of labor was remarkably convenient. The right committed the crimes; the liberals supplied the morality. The occupation and multiple rounds of war in #Gaza, with all their ugliness, were things that “they” did, while “we” investigated abuses and protested to save Israeli #democracy.

“NAZA” attacks that alibi. The film bypasses the usual villains and goes straight for the Holy of Holies"

every time i read hacker news i am confronted by an impression that the billionaire class are actually supported by a moderately sized pyramid of actual real people who are somewhat wealthy, moderately influential, and have tastes so undiscerning that they genuinely believe things like "AI-generated childrens books" should be celebrated. they don't come across as malevolent, unpleasant, or even as annoying tech bros. they're middle-class men who, somehow, think a computer should raise their kids
